JOONY

With a style that dabbles in lo-fi rap and even alternative pop/rock, Joony has earned notice as a rising figure in the so-called “SoundCloud rap” scene, crossing over into the pop and R&B charts by collaborating with fellow Marylander, singer Brent Faiyaz.Jonathan Negero was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, and slowly gravitated toward rap in his teens after an early childhood devoted to skateboarding and listening to alternative rock bands like Arcade Fire and MGMT. His diverse musical tastes could be heard even in his early independent tracks, and by the time he began issuing mixtapes to wider audiences in 2019 and 2020, he was capable of shifting between styles and broadening his listener base as a result.Joony started to get more attention with the release of his album Silent Battles in 2021. With greater media attention came his first big break: Brent Faiyaz, a rising R&B performer from a few towns over in Columbia, Maryland, signed Joony to his Pulse imprint and collaborated with him on several tracks. One, 2021’s “Paper Soldier,” became Joony's most streamed track to date, while 2022’s “FYTB” was a Top 40 hit on Billboard’s R&B chart. From there, Joony released a string of well-received albums, including 2022’s Pretty in Black (featuring popular tracks “Dork” and, on the deluxe edition, “Drifting in Tokyo”), 2023’s SHITUMSS, and 2024’s Memento (the latter was issued through a new partnership between Joony's 211 label and Red Bull Records).
