Charlie Houston
Balancing intimate acoustic fare and downtempo electronic pop, singer and songwriter Charlie Houston focuses on the relatable everyday struggles of early adulthood. While addressing topics like mental health, sexual identity, and heartbreak on her debut EP, 2021's I Hate Spring, she deliberately avoided using third-person pronouns in her lyrics. She had a breakout hit a year later with a guest spot on ODESZA's "Wide Awake," which she followed with her second EP, Bad Posture. Subsequent singles like 2023's "All Night" and "Cranberry" stayed true to her original songwriting approach. A native of Toronto, Houston briefly attended New York University for music before transferring to Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, to study fields outside of the arts. She nevertheless pursued music on her own, combining her breathy, R&B-influenced vocals with a mix of acoustic and atmospheric electronic accompaniment on her first EP, I Hate Spring, which included subject matter inspired by her time at NYU. I Hate Spring producer Chris Yonge was the only featured guest on the five-song set. It arrived on the Arts & Crafts label in April 2021. Before the end of the year, Houston released the single "Bitches in the Bathroom," a song about partygoers hogging the bathroom to make TikTok videos. She was then featured on a version of the ODESZA song "Wide Awake" in mid-2022 to the tune of tens of millions of streams. Around that time, she joined ODESZA on-stage for the Canadian dates of their North American tour. After the success of "Wide Awake," Houston quickly delivered her second EP, the Yonge-produced Bad Posture, in October 2022. It included a Charlie Burg remix of "Bitches in the Bathroom." A month later, she headed out on tour in support of Juno winner Charlotte Cardin. Houston issued new songs throughout 2023, among them "All Night" and "Cranberry."
