Lillian Axe

Led by guitarist Steve Blaze, Lillian Axe is a melodic rock group known for its infectious blend of hard rock and glam-tinged pop-metal. The band caught the tail-end of the pop-metal boom, issuing two superb major label efforts, 1988's Lillian Axe and 1989's Love + War, before succumbing to the cresting wave of the grunge/alternative rock scene. Despite enduring multiple lineup changes throughout the decades, Lillian Axe has remained in the conversation, delivering assured progressive-leaning efforts like Deep Red Shadows (2010), XI: The Days Before Tomorrow (2012), and From Womb to Tomb (2022). Founded in 1983 by Blaze, the band's initial lineup also featured Ron Taylor (vocals), Jon Ster (guitar, keyboards), Rob Stratton (bass), and Danny King (drums). Lillian Axe was taken under the wing of Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby, who produced their eponymous 1988 debut, an bold amalgam of infectious rockers and hard-edged pop tunes. Love + War was even more impressive, featuring extended atmospheric compositions that were both anthemic and memorable. However, the record sold poorly and MCA dropped the band from its roster. In 1990, King and Stratton were replaced by Gene Barnett and Darrin DeLatte, respectively, after which I.R.S. became their home for the next few years. 1992's Poetic Justice and 1993's Psychoschizophrenia breached the Billboard Heatseekers chart, but personnel changes and shifting musical tastes resulted in the band deciding to call it a day, with Blaze going on to form Near Life Experience with his brother Craig Nunemacher. Lillian Axe re-formed briefly at the end of the decade to promote the rarities collection Fields of Yesterday and the concert album Live 2002. In 2007, Blaze returned to the studio with new vocalist Derrick LeFevre, emerging with Waters Rising. Two more long-players, Sad Day on Planet Earth and Deep Red Shadows, appeared in 2009 and 2010. LeFever left the fold shortly after the latter's release, with Brian C. Jones making his studio debut behind the mic on 2012's dynamic and reflective XI: The Days Before Tomorrow, the group's first outing for AFM Records. A ten-year studio hiatus preceded the release of 2022's ambitious concept album, From Womb to Tomb, which saw the group trafficking in a more progressive sound. It also marked the debut of new vocalist Brent Graham.
