Under the name Chlothegod, the dynamic singer/songwriter Chloe Chavis swings with ease from throwback soul to funky alternative R&B to pop punk, favoring raw expression as her writing method. The North Carolina native has made easy transitions across a discography that includes an assortment of singles and a batch of EP-length projects that includes Nearly Straight (2023) and I Feel Different Everyday (2025).Chavis was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she graduated from the same high school as J. Cole. Part of a military family, she also moved around during her upbringing, and absorbed a wide range of genres from multiple generations of her family. Music became her primary creative outlet after she gave theater a shot in middle school and high school. While in college in 2017, she uploaded The Story Behind, her first "mini mixtape," as she put it. At some point after the 2018 release of Statement, her follow-up, she considered stepping back from music, but interest from the Universal-distributed EQT Recordings led to a label deal and Chavis' relocation to Los Angeles. She made her EQT debut in 2023 with Nearly Straight, a seven-track effort highlighted by the seductive love ballad "Camille" and the vexed, off-center funk of "UGOMDN." A few intermediary singles preceded I Feel Different Every Day, a more whimsical set exemplified by the alternately calm and raging title song. Originally released in February 2025, the EP was expanded from seven 11 tracks for a deluxe edition issued two months later. "Keep My Name Out Your Mouth," a seething guitar-and-voice demo recording, was out that June.
