Himalayas
Since joining forces in high school in 2015, Himalayas have become a rock band to watch: releasing catchy tracks like “Cheap Thrills,” “Thank God I’m Not You,” “Sigh on a Hurricane,” and “Alone”; opening for U.K. legends and world-conquering arena acts from Manic Street Preachers to Foo Fighters, and even generating some press about the harsh realities for working bands in the post-COVID music industry.Joe Williams and Mike Griffiths of Cardiff, Wales, were fast friends in school, playing together in local clubs as a duo (Williams taking lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Griffiths taking lead guitar and backing vocals). Soon, they filled out a full-band lineup with another schoolmate, drummer James Goulbourn, who recruited a friend of his, bassist Louis Heaps. Inspired by heavy-duty guitar groups like Queens of the Stone Age and Muse, the group worked quickly and developed a loyal following off the strength of their debut EP Ecstasy, featuring fan favorites “How Do You Sleep?” and “Cheap Thrills,” the latter of which became their first track to draw streams in the millions. The buzz around Himalayas grew even louder in 2017 when their track “Thank God I’m Not You” was put into rotation by both BBC Radio 1 and Virgin Radio. In due course, the song amassed more than 40 million streams in its first few years of release; its follow-up, “Sigh on a Hurricane,” built up more than 12 million streams as well. Other singles like 2018’s “If I Tell You” and 2019’s “The Masquerade” became staples of their increasingly notable sets, and they appeared at both the Reading and Leeds Festival and South by Southwest in 2018.The immediate wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown could have affected Himalayas adversely as it did many other bands; instead, the group re-emerged victoriously in 2021, making their television debut in England and opening for Welsh rock heroes Manic Street Preachers. The following year, they signed a deal with Nettwerk Records, which released their first full-length album From Hell to Here in 2023. Himalayas released several non-album singles in 2024, including the forceful “V.O.V.,” written around a series of lyrics given to the group by AC/DC singer Brian Johnson. The quartet, who also opened for Foo Fighters in 2024, made headlines of a different sort when Williams and Heaps painted a stark picture of life as a rising major-label musician in the 21st century: Williams was working in a supermarket and Heaps in a coffee shop when not recording or touring.
