Jess Ribeiro

Australian singer/songwriter Jess Ribeiro is a multifaceted artist whose albums traverse everything from country-folk and indie noir to proto-punk and AM pop.Ribeiro was born and raised in Armidale, a small, picturesque city in New South Wales, about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. She fell in love with music and writing as a child and dreamed of being, in her words, "a storyteller." She studied music in Brisbane and teaching in Melbourne before moving 2000 miles to the extreme opposite end of the country, to Darwin, in Australia's far north. There, inspired by everything from Dusty Springfield to the Velvet Underground, she formed a band, the Bone Collectors. Her recording debut came in 2008 with the "Pilgrimage" maxi, followed by the "Live at the Happy Yess" maxi in 2010. Her 2012 debut album, My Little River, also featuring the Bone Collectors, was short-listed for the Australian Music Prize and won Best Country Album at that year's AIR Awards.2015's Kill It Yourself, her first solo album proper, was recorded in Berlin, produced by the Bad Seeds' Mick Harvey, and recorded by Einstürzende Neubauten's Alexander Hacke. After some time traveling in Europe and America, she moved back to Melbourne. 2019 brought her third album Love Hate, an homage to the sound of late '70s/early '80s New York, from the Velvet Underground to Blondie and Talking Heads. Ribeiro's fourth album, Summer of Love, written and recorded mostly alone during pandemic sheltering, was released in 2024.
