Thorium

Known for their unrelentingly intense and melodic sound, Denmark's Thorium combine the icy Scandinavian melodeath style of Entombed, Dismember, and At the Gates with the palm-muted riffs and face-melting blastbeats of stalwart Florida death metal outfits like Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Brutality. Founded in 1997 and led by vocalist Michael H. Anderson, the group issued their debut album, Ocean of Blasphemy, in 2000. The record elicited acclaim for its uncompromising old-school death metal sound, a style the band continued to adapt and refine on subsequent albums Unleashing the Demons (2002) and Feral Creation (2008). Thorium went on hiatus shortly after the latter effort's release but reconvened in late 2017 with a retooled lineup to lay down tracks for their long-awaited fourth full-length album. The resulting Blasphemy Awakes, recorded in Copenhagen with Jakob Gundel (Invocator), appeared the following year. Emboldened by the positive response, Anderson kept the fires burning in 2022 with Danmark, a set spilling over with blackened fury and punitive grooves. The veteran group's sixth long-player, The Bastard, arrived two years later with a teeth-rattling modern take on classic death metal.
