Ax and the Hatchetmen

The bright, sprightly indie rock of Ax and the Hatchetmen is bolstered by catchy songwriting and a small horn section. Formed in 2018 around lead vocalist and singer Axel Ellis, the Chicago-based group features several musicians with a jazz background but has its sound firmly rooted in a lively rock mode. The band's first singles, "Silhouette" and "Peach Trees," appeared in 2019, soon followed by the EP Bear on the Roof (2020). Further singles like "Beezlebub," "Grace," and "Existential Crisis, Pt. 1" drew more attention to the group, and the concert EP Ax and the Hatchetmen on Audiotree Live followed in 2023. In 2024, the band released the singles "Goofy (Acoustic)," "Where tf Did I Park My Car," and "Flagstaff" while preparing their first album.Ax and the Hatchetmen got started in 2018 when singer and vocalist Axel Ellis, a music student at Columbia University in Chicago, contacted guitarist Sal Defilippis after seeing a fingerstyle acoustic guitar video of him. Singer and guitarist Kenny Olzewski, bassist Hunter Olshefke, drummer Nick Deputy, trumpet player Phil Pistone, and saxophonist Quinn Dolan soon completed the seven-piece band, and the conservatory-style jazz background of several of the musicians informed their intricate but catchy arrangements. The first single, "Silhouette," was released in 2019, and was soon followed by "Peach Trees," which proved to be quite popular online. A five-track EP, Bear on the Roof, was released in July 2020.More successful singles such as "Mako," "Existential Crisis, Pt. 1," "Beezlebub," and "Utah" followed in 2021 and 2022, as did two headlining tours. A seven-track EP, Ax and the Hatchetmen on Audiotree Live, was released in 2023. While playing more live shows and preparing a full-fledged album, the group continued to release new singles in 2024, including "Goofy (Acoustic)," "Where tf Did I Park My Car" (which was included in a live version on the 2023 EP), and "Flagstaff."
