Da Silva

Da Silva is a French singer/songwriter whose reflective, brooding sound incorporates elements of chanson, chamber pop, rock, and folk. He first rose to popularity with albums like 2007's De Beaux Jours à Venir and 2007's La Tendresse des Fous, which earned both critical praise and chart success. Over the coming years, Da Silva continued to carve out a unique niche, enlarging his fan base with 2013's Villa Rosa and 2017's more upbeat L'Aventure, and collaborating with visual artists on several book projects. He remained prolific into the next decade, releasing two more albums, 2022's Extrait D'une Vie Imparfaite and 2024's Grand Hotel.Born Emmanuel da Silva in Nevers, France, the young artist tried his hand at many forms of musical expression before settling upon the introspective, melancholic acoustic sound that made him famous. He began forming bands when he was as young as 12 -- he started with punk then experimented with progressive rock sounds throughout his teen years. Musically dissatisfied, he finally picked up an acoustic guitar at the age of 21 and began developing the emotional and musically complex style that would characterize his future output.Da Silva's breakthrough came nearly six years later with 2005's Décembre en Été, his first solo album. Following its release, Da Silva toured throughout Europe, emerging from relative obscurity to find a fan base. Recording "sketches" of his compositions in his home and on the road, Da Silva began to compile the material that would become his second album, De Beaux Jours à Venir. Full of melancholy and longing, the record made the Top 25 on national charts. In 2008 he wrote most of Elsa Lunghini's eponymous seventh album, and the following year he released his own third LP, La Tendresse des Fous, which saw him recording for the first time in a top-rate studio, with a varied instrumental palette including brass and strings, and influences from blues and fado. His next release, 2012's La Distance, was a more stripped-back affair with some electro influences. Throughout, he stuck to his dark, somber, and melancholy tone. In between working on his own material, Da Silva found time to contribute songs to a number of French female artists working in a similar idiom, including Marina, Jenifer, and Claire Denamur. Following 2013's Villa Rosa, he collaborated with visual artist Vanessa Da Silva on the 2015 book Les Fleurs Imaginaires, providing its accompanying music. Returning to his own work, Da Silva explored a more uptempo and hopeful mood on his next album, L'Aventure. Released in 2017 and recorded in Brussels, it was something of a departure for the singer, though he returned to a more melancholic tone on its poignant 2019 follow-up, Au Revoir Chagrin. That same year he collaborated on a children's book, this time providing the music for illustrator Sophie Bouxom's Le Petit Nuage.Da Silva continued working into the next decade, releasing the elaborate and richly arranged Extrait D'une Vie Imparfaite in 2022, followed two years later by Grand Hotel
