Damso

A chart-topping rapper/singer in France, Switzerland, and his longtime home of Belgium, Damso's childhood memories of an embattled Kinshasa inform some of his candid, trap-styled raps and sung verses about topics like racism, relationships, and fame. His debut album, 2016's Batterie faible, went to number two on the Walloon Ultratop chart (French-speaking Belgium) while cracking the Top Ten in France. His next three albums -- 2017's Ipséité, 2018's Lithopédion (featuring hit single "Smog"), and 2020's QALF (featuring number ones "BXL Zoo" with Hamza and "Morose") -- topped the album charts in both Belgium and France. He returned to the number one spot in both countries with his sixth studio long-player, 2025's Bēyāh.Born William Kalubi Mwamba in Kinshasa, Zaire (later renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo), Damso left the country with his sociologist mother and cardiologist father when he was nine due to armed conflicts in the city. Lyrics about his memories of gunfire and civilian fatalities surface in some of his songs. The family settled outside of Brussels, Belgium, where, as a teenager, Damso's passion for music interfered with his academic performance, leading to conflict with his parents. He was already performing at local and underground events by his early teens, and he formed a rap collective with friends, one of whom was rapper/producer Dolfa. Damso's parents ultimately kicked him out of the family home, and he was forced to survive on his own, participating in some illegal activities to make ends meet and experiencing racism in low-level jobs. He eventually moved to a largely Congolese area in the Brussels neighborhood of Ixelles at the age of 22, around the time he released his first solo project, Salle d'attente, as a free download in 2014. This brought him to the attention of French rapper Booba, who included the Damso song "Poseidon" on his 2015 mixtape OKLM and invited him into the 92i collective. An appearance on another Booba mixtape, Nero Nemesis, followed before the end of the year, and Damso was signed to Capitol Music France.Damso's debut album, Batterie faible ("Low Battery"), appeared on 92i Records in July 2016 and went platinum in France, rising to number eight on the album chart there while climbing to number two in French-speaking Belgium. The album also cracked the Top 20 in Switzerland. He followed it a year later with Ipséité ("Ipseity"), which went to number one France and Belgium and to number five in Switzerland. Aided by the popularity the chart-topping single "Smog," Damso's third album, 2018's Lithopédion, went to number one in France, French Belgium, and Switzerland while becoming his first significant hit in Flemish Belgium, where it reached number 11. In 2020, Damso returned with QALF, followed by the 2021 expansion, QALF Infinity, his first releases on his own Trente-quatre Centime imprint. The singles "BXL Zoo" (featuring Hamza) and "Morose" both topped the French-Belgian chart, and the latter song went to number one in France, while QALF itself went to the top of the charts in French Belgium and France, number two in Flemish Belgium, and number three in Switzerland. It also marked Damso's first appearance in the Top 40 in Canada, where it peaked at number 36. QALF Live appeared in 2023, as did the non-album single "La rue" with No Limit and Gazo, which proved to be another French chart-topping hit. His next album, 2024's J'ai Menti ("I Lied") contained another French chart-topper in "Alpha" featuring Kalash, and the album went to number two in France while hitting number one in Wallonia (French Belgium). The Damso compilation Vieux Sons also saw release on Trente-quatre Centime that year as well. His dominance in the region hadn't peaked yet, as his sixth studio LP, May 2025's Bēyāh, topped the charts in Flanders, Wallonia, and France; went to number two in Switzerland; and became his third album to enter the Top 100 in Canada (number 58). It included the Belgian chart-topping hit "Impardonnable."
