Harmonious Thelonious
German electronic musician Stefan Schwander uses the name Harmonious Thelonious for his danceable excursions which draw connections between hypnotic, repetition-based forms of music such as minimalism, Detroit techno, and African drumming. While the project often leans toward rough, post-industrial textures, particularly on early efforts like 2010's Talking, he channels early, stripped-down house on buoyant releases such as 2016's International Dance Record, and he incorporates traditional Arabic and African acoustic instruments into the winding polyrhythms of recordings like 2021's Instrumentals! (A Collection of Outernational Music Studies).Previously active as part of an indie rock band called the I-Burnettes, Düsseldorf-based Stefan Schwander first began releasing electronic music during the mid-1990s, as part of the exotica-influenced downtempo group the Bad Examples, whose sound is best summed up by the title of 1999's Elektro Tiki. He blended minimal techno, deep house, and electro-disco with his releases as Antonelli Electr., which primarily appeared on his own Italic label (previously Stewardess). His other major projects included the minimal dub techno venture A Rocket in Dub, the laid-back tech-house alias Repeat Orchestra, and the deep techno moniker Rhythm Maker, as well as a collaboration with Michael Scheibenreiter called Swimmingpool and a duo with Kompakt regular Jörg Burger named Pop Up. The debut EP by Harmonious Thelonious, Just Drifting, was released by Dreck Records in 2008. Around this time, Schwander also began collaborating with Marc Matter and Florian Meyer (both of Institut Für Feinmotorik) as the Durian Brothers, an experimental trio using prepared turntables, sequencer, and effects. The first Harmonious Thelonious album, Talking, arrived on Italic in 2010, followed by Listen in 2012. Several additional EPs appeared on labels like Diskant and Belgium's Meakusma. Schleißen 1, a split LP with Serbian artist Abul Mogard, was issued by Emotional Response in 2015, and the full-length Santos appeared the next month. The house-influenced International Dance Record was released in 2016, and EPs for labels like Versatile Records and the Trilogy Tapes explored Arabic influences, with Moroccan flute and other woodwinds played by guest musician Ghazi Barakat. Mini-LP Petrolia appeared on Marmo Music in 2018, and some of HT's most club-friendly releases appeared on labels like Couldn't Care More and Disk. 2020's Plong, HT's first release for Bureau B, mixed noisy distortion and industrial techniques with Middle Eastern elements. His second album for the label, Instrumentals! (A Collection of Outernational Music Studies), followed in 2021.
