The Barr Brothers

The Barr Brothers are a Montreal-based Americana/progressive folk quartet with roots in New England and a deep love of folk, blues, and world music. Brad Barr's assured vocals and strong songwriting are complemented by his brother Andrew's sturdy and studious drumming, along with tasteful contributions from bassist Morgan Moore, pedal steel guitarist Brett Lanier, and harpist Eveline Gregoire-Rousseau. Emerging in 2006, the group's sophomore long-player, 2014's delta blues-leaning Sleeping Operator, earned a Juno nomination, while 2017's homespun Queen of the Breakers topped multiple critics' year-end lists. In 2024, the group teamed up with Richard Reed Perry (Arcade Fire) and Little Scream on the single "Live That Way Forever." The Barr Brothers were formed in 2006 after the dissolution of the siblings' avant-rock trio the Slip. Originally based out of Boston, Massachusetts, the Barrs spent the bulk of the '90s touring with the Slip before calling it quits in 2004. Upon relocating to Montreal, the duo hooked up with classically trained harpist Sarah Page and multi-instrumentalist Andres Vial and began operating under the Barr Brothers moniker. The newly minted quartet's eponymous debut album was issued in 2011 via Secret City Records and elicited positive reviews which helped land the group some television work, including an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. The band's acclaimed sophomore long-player, Sleeping Operator, arrived in October 2014 to critical accolades eventually earning them a Juno nomination for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. While touring North America and Europe, the Barr Brothers recorded a handful of tracks in Iceland with producer Valgeir Sigurösson (Björk, Sigur Rós) which were released in 2015 as the Alta Falls EP. The band's heartfelt third full-length, Queens of the Breakers, arrived in October 2017 and focused on themes of family and home. 2023 saw the band issue a pair of Queens of the Breakers outtakes via their Patreon page, and in 2024 they contributed to the Richard Reed Perry single "Live That Way Forever," appearing on the soundtrack for the biographical sports drama film The Iron Claw.
