Beth McCarthy

U.K. singer and songwriter Beth McCarthy mixes personal lyrics with atmospheric electronics and textured pop/rock arrangements that reflect influences like Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding. She released her more singer/songwriter-oriented debut EP, Northern Light, as a teenager in 2013 but later went viral with the jealousy-themed "She Gets the Flowers" in 2021. The next year's No Hard Feelings EP featured more relationship songs with her rock-tinged electro-pop sound, and she explored sexual identity on 2024's IDK How to Talk to Girls EP and subsequent singles like "All My Friends Are Hot."Hailing from York, England, McCarthy started performing in stage musicals at the age of seven, joined her first band at 11, and began playing guitar and writing songs by 13. It wasn't long before she started gigging, and she uploaded her first single, "Hero," in 2012. The self-released EP Northern Light followed in July 2013; she had just turned 16. While building a social media following with her performances of both original songs and covers, she auditioned for The Voice UK (2014's series three), although she was eliminated in the knockout rounds. Around this time, she started playing with a full band, getting opening slots for acts like Shed Seven and the Orchestra (former members of Electric Light Orchestra), and booking festivals such as Latitude and Green Man.In 2016, McCarthy's ballad "Streets of London" was used in the movie 100 Streets, and she continued to release singles over the next couple years, some of which were included on the EP Self Portrait in early 2019. She joined the social-media platform TikTok in late 2020 and got millions of views for her performance of her reworked version of Will Joseph Cook's "Be Around Me." She did better in 2021, when she collected tens of millions of streams for her single "She Gets the Flowers," released that March. It found McCarthy alternately loudly and tearfully comparing herself to another woman.Featuring more electro-pop/rock relationship songs, the No Hard Feelings EP followed in September 2022, and February 2024's IDK How to Talk to Girls introduced queer-themed material. She followed it with the songs "Good Bi" and the celebratory "All My Friends Are Hot" before the end of the year, which also included McCarthy's first tour of Australia.
