JayWood

Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer JayWood is a hard artist to pin down stylistically as he gracefully splits the difference between indie rock and hip-hop. In the late 2010s he began releasing a strain of low-key bedroom pop that incorporated elements of jangling indie rock, R&B, psych, and funk. From his home base in Winnipeg, he self-released the 2019 LP Time, then joined the Captured Tracks roster, making his label debut with the acclaimed 2021 EP Some Days. He continued to evolve and sharpen his musical approach on 2022's synth pop-adjacent Slingshot and 2025's Leo Negro, which leaned heavily on the hip-hop side of the equation while still sounding diverse and psychedelic.Growing up in Manitoba's capital city, Jeremy Haywood-Smith began playing music in his teens, first learning drums, then later guitar. Early musical influences included everything from reggae and classic soul music to Daft Punk, Beck, and Outkast. In 2015, Haywood-Smith's personal life was at a turning point. A confluence of situations had him questioning his own self-identity, and he turned to songwriting to help sort out his thoughts. With a borrowed laptop and minimal equipment, he taught himself the basics of production and recorded an EP's worth of material under the name JayWood. While these initial sessions were shelved and later re-recorded, it set him on his path, and over the next few years, he began to develop a unique, self-made style on D.I.Y. releases like 2017's Somber > Summer EP and his 2019 full-length debut, Time. After signing with the Captured Tracks label, JayWood revisited his unreleased 2015 material, re-recording much of it to create the 2021 EP Some Days. Meanwhile, his newer material began to evolve in an interesting new direction. Following the 2019 death of his mother, Haywood-Smith began to examine more deeply the uniqueness of his Black experience of growing up in a predominantly white Canadian city. This self-exploration resulted in deeper connections to his cultural roots as well as a more wide-ranging sound that incorporated more electronic, synth-driven sounds on 2022's vivid Slingshot album. The album was short-listed for the Polaris Prize and served to boost Haywood-Smith's profile. When it came time to record 2025's Leo Negro, he sought a more collaborative approach that led him to work with tUne-yArDs, Will Grierson, Arthur Antony, Brett Ticzon, and others. The album swerved from heavily psychedelic indie rock and laid-back hip-hop to breezy bedroom pop, as Haywood-Smith lyrically delved ever deeper into issues of identity. It was released by longtime label Captured Tracks in August.
