L-Vis 1990

L-Vis 1990 is an electro-bass producer based in London, whose tracks draw from U.K. styles such as drum'n'bass and grime as well as U.S. sounds such as Chicago house and Baltimore club. Along with Bok Bok, he is the co-founder of the trendsetting label Night Slugs, which helped push club music forward with its experimentation-heavy hybrid of grime, R&B, house, and bass music. After issuing singles and EPs through Night Slugs, Mad Decent, Institubes, and other imprints, L-Vis 1990 surfaced on major label Island Records with his 2011 debut full-length, Neon Dreams. He later issued the more pop-influenced mixtape 12 Thousand Nights in 2017, and returned to instrumental club music with his Dance System alias and L-Vis releases like the 2025 EP Summer Heat.Born James Connolly and originally hailing from Brighton, England, he began DJing as a teenager and later began making beats of his own. He made his commercial recording debut as L-Vis 1990 in 2008 with an eponymous four-track EP on the label Très Cool. The following year he released several more EPs, including United Groove on Mad Decent, Compass/Zahonda on Institubes/Sound Pellegrino, and the Bok Bok split release Night Slugs on Dress 2 Sweat. In addition, he made a name for himself as a first-rate remixer. Some of his best-known remixes from this period include Gucci Vump's "Sha! Shtil!," Passion Pit's "Little Secrets," Crystal Fighters' "Xtatic Truth," Frankmusik's "3 Little Words," and Filthy Dukes' "Tupacrobotclubrock." His productions appeared on several mix albums, most notably Freq Nasty's FabricLive 42 (2008) and Buraka Som Sistema's FabricLive 49 (2009). After two years of success as a club night, Night Slugs launched its own record label in 2010. L-Vis provided one of its first releases, the EP Forever You. The label additionally hosted releases from Jam City, Kingdom, and Egyptrixx, shaping the direction of bass-heavy club music. L-Vis issued his debut album, Neon Dreams, through Island Records in late 2011, with Para One, Teki Latex, and Samantha Lim all making guest appearances. He continued issuing music through Night Slugs, including 2013's Club Constructions Vol. 1 and 2013's Ballads, while Circuits appeared on Clone's Jack for Daze series. Connolly debuted his Dance System alias with a self-titled EP on Clone in 2014. System Preferences followed on Ultramajic in 2015. A self-issued L-Vis 1990 mixtape, 12 Thousand Nights, appeared in 2017, featuring guests like Jimmy Edgar, Flohio, and Gaika, exploring a pop-oriented sound influenced by hip-hop, R&B, and dancehall. A set of club-friendly remixes of the mixtape followed in 2018. Connolly focused on making house and techno as Dance System for a while, issuing EPs on labels like Monkeytown and Chiwax, as well as the 2020 mixtape Where's the Party At?, boasting an extensive guestlist including Herbert, DJ Deeon, I. Jordan, and UNiiQU3. He resurfaced as L-Vis 1990 in 2024, releasing tracks such as "Get Down Low" and "On Tweeq." Renegade, an EP with East London emcee Eklipse, appeared in 2025. In July, L-Vis released the EP Summer Heat on Club Djembe.
