Thornhill
Melbourne-based alt-metal outfit Thornhill received both commercial and critical adulation for their sophomore album Heroine (2022) and notched a second Top Ten at home with its 2025 follow-up BODIES.The initial group members -- singer Jacob Charlton, guitarists Ethan McCann and Sam Anderson, bassist Nick Sjogren, and drummer Ben Maida -- were all familiar with each other's work in Melbourne’s local metalcore scene, having crossed paths at various battles of the bands. The quintet made their partnership official in 2016 and quickly attracted attention with their debut EP 13, including “XY,” which featured guest vocals from Void of Vision frontman Jack Bergin. Thornhill soon toured with VoV as their opening act. The group released singles “Temperer” and “Limbo” in 2017, and their profile was raised considerably when they won a contest through venerable Aussie radio station Triple J to open for U.K. metal act Architects. Their year ended with Anderson's departure; he was replaced by Better Half guitarist Matt van Duppen.A rejuvenated Thornhill signed to local indie UNFD (distributed abroad by Epitaph) to release the Butterfly EP in 2018, scoring opening slots over the next 18 months for Australian metal acts like Parkway Drive, Ocean Grove, and Make Them Suffer. By the time their debut album The Dark Pool reached the Australian Top 20 in 2019, they were headliners at home -- and while additional tour plans were curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the group kept fans engaged by releasing instrumental and vocal-only versions of The Dark Pool. (The group also made odd headlines when, early in lockdown, The Dark Pool favorite “Lily & The Moon” got stuck on a four-hour loop on Triple J’s feed.)Thornhill's next album was the energetic Heroine in 2022, which debuted at number three on Australia’s album chart and also earned an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album. Larger promotional plans were briefly curtailed by the group citing burnout; van Duppen departed the ranks by year’s end, and the group continued as a quartet, with frontman Charlton serving as rhythm guitarist. After rebuilding from a theft in their practice space in early 2023, the group resumed recording and touring, returning with the album BODIES in 2025. It peaked at number four on the local album chart.
