Danny Daze
Miami-based DJ, producer, and label owner Danny Daze has resisted categorization throughout his career, releasing music influenced by Dutch electro, Detroit techno, and disco-house, and spinning similarly eclectic DJ sets. He broke through with 2011's "Your Everything," an infectious single with Louisahhh which caused many to peg him as a house producer, but subsequent releases like his 2013 collaboration with Maceo Plex (as Jupiter Jazz) and 2016's "Swim" demonstrated his love for dark, hard-driving techno and stark, sleazy electro. On less club-friendly releases such as 2020's Protocol 305 and 2022's GT (with Jonny from Space), he channels his experimental electro and IDM influences.Daniel Gomez was born and raised in Miami; both of his parents were Cuban immigrants. Heavily influenced by his city's electro scene, he embraced everything from freestyle to the output of more experimental labels like Schematic and Merck. Nicknamed Danny Daze by his mother, he started out playing records at weddings, after which he would attend all-night raves. He was arrested for dealing ecstasy, and spent several months in prison, followed by two years of house arrest. During this time, he learned how to produce music, making his first tracks on cracked software in 2004. He soon started playing at clubs, and he launched his first label, Omniamm, in 2005. He teamed up with brothers Joe and Matt Masurka, forming the remix project DiscoTech (which ended up doing major label club remixes for stars like Britney Spears and Donna Summer) and additionally making original music as Señor Stereo. After releasing a few solo singles, Daze produced the track "Your Everything," a mixture of Miami bass and new wave influences, in time for 2011's Winter Music Conference. Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones both featured the track in their sets, and Jones soon released it on his Hot Creations label. It quickly became a club hit, and Daze began his first international tour with a set at London superclub Fabric. While his audiences expected him to spin house music, he was far more interested in playing electro. He collaborated with fellow Miami resident Maceo Plex, releasing the 2013 EP Booty Jazz under the Underground Resistance-inspired moniker Jupiter Jazz. He soon issued material on Ellum Audio, Kompakt (several volumes of the Speicher series), and Jimmy Edgar's Ultramajic, most of which had more to do with dark, driving techno and electro than house. Daze founded the Omnidisc label in 2015 and released the EP Four, which featured collaborators like Drvg Cvltvre and 214, and Miami followed in 2016. Pulmotor, a collaboration with Irish electro producer DeFeKT, and the druggy solo EP El Cubano both appeared in 2019. Schematic released the experimental EP Protocol 305 (as well as remix companion Protocol 305 Variables) in 2020. Binary, a split EP with Anthony Rother, appeared on System 108 in 2021, and GT, with Jonny from Space, was issued by Omnidisc in 2022.
