Ruffians
San Francisco's Ruffians combine the earworm riffs and melodies of traditional hard rock with the raw power of heavy metal. They courted mainstream success in 1985 with the release of their internationally charting debut EP, which led to supporting slots for high-profile artists like UFO, Alice Cooper, Saxon, Y&T, and Slayer. Ruffians disbanded in 1988 but reunited in 2004 for a festival appearance and eventually headed back into the studio, releasing the full-length Desert of Tears in 2006. Formed in 1983 by vocalist Carl Albert, guitarists Craig Behrhorst and Chris Atchison, bassist Dan Moura, and drummer Luke Bowman, Ruffians recorded a few demos and opened shows for visiting major acts before recording an eponymous six-song mini-album, which they released on Victory Records in 1985 -- the EP was distributed on SPV Records (Europe) and FEMS Records (Japan) as well. The single "Run for Cover" appeared on Restless Records' Eastern Front: Live at Ruthie's Inn compilation, and "Wasteland" was used in American Ninja II and, much later, in the 2024 horror film MaXXXine. Ruffians quit in 1988 but re-formed in 2004 to play Germany’s Bang Your Head Festival. Helion Records released There & Back, a compilation of their studio recordings including live tracks and unreleased demos, in 2005. Desert of Tears, the group's first new material since 1985, arrived in 2006 on German label Metal Heaven.
