Alextbh

Malaysian pop star Alextbh, born Alex Bong in 1998, began the first big steps toward a music career while he was finishing up his college degree. He began to teach himself to make music as a teenager, and spent time singing in a church choir as well as trying to imitate his musical idols like Mariah Carey. His established his sound, heavily influenced by R&B, on his 2016 single “Stoop So Low”. He built a name for himself and became a controversial figure by declaring himself queer and continually supporting gay issues in a country where homosexuality was still illegal. His 2018 release “Still Mine” helped build his profile, as did a Billboard article naming him one 10 up-and-coming queer artists to watch. Becoming a gay icon in his home country did not dissuade him from tackling sexual material, as was shown in the title track of his 2020 debut EP, The Chase, which addressed the feelings of desire and anxiety surrounding a hookup and the possibility of love.
