LU KALA

Lusamba Kalala, better known as Lu Kala, exudes star power with ebullient and sharp-witted pop songs that reflect everyday life. Before she released the resolute "DCMO (Don't Count Me Out)," her first commercial single as Lu Kala, the Congolese-Canadian singer and songwriter recorded and performed under the names Peradise and Vanessa Lu, and co-wrote "Dangerous" for Jennifer Hudson. She released Worthy, her first EP, in 2020, and two years later saw her audience grow exponentially with "Pretty Girl Era," a disco-flavored single that led to a pair of Juno Awards nominations. After she made another breakthrough with an appearance on Latto's "Lottery," and co-wrote Katy Perry's "OK," Kala offered her second EP, No Tears on This Ride, in 2025. Lusamba Vanessa Kalala was born in Kinshasa and moved to Toronto when she was three years old. Raised in Toronto and Ajax, Ontario, she got her start under the name Peradise, but within a few years began recording and writing as Vanessa Lu. Most notably, she co-wrote and sang background on "Dangerous," the first song on Jennifer Hudson's 2014 album JHUD. It wasn't until September 2018 that she debuted as Lu Kala with "DCMO (Don't Count Me Out)." A version in French, her first language, was out the following March. The eight-song Worthy EP, gathering the original version, subsequent singles, and new material, arrived in October 2020. Kala then signed with producer Dr. Luke's Amigo label and returned in 2022 with "Pretty Girl Era." The self-empowerment disco-pop anthem had a long shelf life culminating with a 2024 Juno Awards nomination for Single of the Year, and Kala was also up for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. "Pretty Girl Era" was a Dr. Luke production, as were Kala's next couple major efforts as a songwriter: Latto's "Lottery" (on which she was also featured) and Katy Perry's "OK." In April 2025, Kala released No Tears on This Ride, an EP highlighted by "Pretty Girl Era" and the more uptempo "Hotter Now."
