The Temper Trap

With their pure, soaring vocals and panoramic sound, the Temper Trap are a chart-topping indie rock outfit from Australia. With help from their breakthrough single, the international Top 20 hit "Sweet Disposition," they reached the Top Ten at home and the Top 30 in the U.K. with their debut album, 2009's Conditions. They then went all the way to number one in Australia with 2012's The Temper Trap and 2016's Thick as Thieves, both of which found them stretching their lush, driving sound in slightly artier directions. After a hiatus that included a second, viral life for "Sweet Disposition" that included several popular remixes, the band returned with a fusion of art rock and dance elements on singles like 2025's "Giving Up Air." The Temper Trap began building an audience in Melbourne, lead singer/guitarist Dougy Mandagi, guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto, bassist Jonathon Aherne, and drummer Toby Dundas, all of whom sing backup, first rose to local acclaim after playing St. Jerome's Laneway Festival in March 2006. They released their debut EP that same year, and word of the group's potential soon spread to other continents. Veteran British producer Jim Abbiss (who previously worked on the Arctic Monkeys' debut) saw enough promise in the Temper Trap's material to fly to Australia, where he gathered the musicians into Melbourne's Sing Sing Studios and helped ready their debut album, Conditions, for a 2009 release. Meanwhile, Joseph Greer was added to the lineup on keyboards and guitar."Sweet Disposition," a U2-styled anthem, was released that September as the band's first single. It cracked the Top 20 in multiple countries and appeared in the Zooey Deschanel film (500) Days of Summer, which helped the band increase its following in America. The Temper Trap responded by touring heavily, making stops at festivals like Glastonbury and Bonnaroo along the way. They also reached out to a number of DJs, producers, and bands, asking them to remix material from the group's debut. The result, Conditions Remixed, was released during the band's tour in 2010. Two years later, they delivered their sophomore effort, the eponymously titled The Temper Trap. Produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, Goldfrapp), the album featured the singles "Need Your Love" and "Trembling Hands." Certified platinum, the album peaked at number one in Australia, cracked the Top 20 in the U.K., and earned the band two 2012 ARIA Awards, including Best Rock Album. In 2013, during the early stages of production on the group's third album, guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto parted ways with the band. The departure left keyboardist/guitarist Joseph Greer to assume all primary guitar duties. The Temper Trap returned in 2016 with the completed Thick as Thieves, featuring production from Damian Taylor (Björk, Arcade Fire, the Killers). It returned them to the top spot on the ARIA album chart, and in 2018, they opened the Oceanic leg of a world tour by Imagine Dragons. The band were taking an indefinite hiatus when they turned up on the 50 Songs for 50 Years live broadcast and accompanying Mushroom: Fifty Years of Making Noise (Reimagined) compilation, a tribute to Australia's Mushroom Records. The Temper Trap contributed a cover of the Church's "Under the Milky Way" as well as their own breakout hit, "Sweet Disposition." Around that time "Sweet Disposition" became something of a viral phenomenon, with various popular remixes surfacing and the original version packing on millions more streams. 2025's "Sweet Disposition (A Moment, a Love)" with Lost Frequencies charted in Belgium, and a house remix by John Summit and Silver Panda was one of the several to garner tens of millions of streams of its own. The band soon responded with original material in form of the August 2025 single "Lucky Dimes," a clattering rock tune that they quickly followed with the indie rock-club fusion "Giving Up Air."
