Have Mercy
Blending warm, melancholic alt-rock with heavy emo and post-hardcore elements, Have Mercy are an indie band from Baltimore, Maryland. After debuting with 2013's The Earth Pushed Back, the group signed with Hopeless Records and released three more albums including 2019's poignant The Love Life. After enduring several lineup changes, Have Mercy disbanded in early 2020, only to re-form two years later. A self-titled 2022 EP soon led to a proper comeback album in 2023's Numb.Leaving behind the metal scene in which they'd cut their teeth, singer/guitarist Brian Swindle, guitarist Andrew Johnson, bassist Nick Woolford, and drummer Aaron Alt formed Have Mercy in 2009 and released their first EP, My Oldest Friend, in early 2012. The band launched several D.I.Y. tours and quickly developing a national presence, signing with Boston indie Topshelf Records to release their 2013 debut album, The Earth Pushed Back. The record was well received by critics and fans alike, and in 2014, Have Mercy signed with vaunted indie Hopeless Records, which handled their second LP, Place of Our Own, later that year. By this point, Todd Wallace had taken over drums from Alt, marking the first of several lineup shifts for Have Mercy. Working with producers Paul Leavitt (All Time Low) and Brian McTernan (Thrice), the band recorded their Hopeless follow-up, Make the Best of It, which was released in early 2017. Guitarist Nate Gleason took over for Johnson ahead of 2019's The Love Life, an album that charted Swindle's tumultuous personal life over the previous three years. By the year's end, Have Mercy decided to disband and announced a farewell tour for early 2020. Interrupted by the global pandemic, their final tour was cut short and the members went their separate ways.Swindle later reconvened the band's core lineup of Johnson, Woolford, and Wallace, who recorded a self-titled EP in 2022. Singles like "1979" and "Alive" paved the way for Have Mercy's comeback album, Numb, in late 2023.
