Kylie Cantrall
Well-known as a teen starlet of multiple Disney Channel shows, including Gabby Duran & The Unsittables and the Descendants franchise, Kylie Cantrall was poised to take the bad-girl energy of her most famous character -- Red, the daughter of Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts -- and parlay it into a debut album in 2025 heavily inspired by her love for ‘90s pop and R&B.For Cantrall, born in 2005 in Los Angeles, a career in the arts was hardly far-fetched. Her father, Alex Cantrall, notched writing and production credits with acts like Dru Hill, Mya and, most notably, JoJo -- co-penning her breakthrough “Leave (Get Out)” -- while her mother worked as a dancer and model. A fan of acts like TLC, Brandy, Aaliyah and other ‘90s R&B/pop hitmakers, Cantrall was regularly taking singing lessons and entering dance competitions before she turned 10. Crucially, she started a YouTube channel, Hello Kylie, to discuss her passion for original programming on the Disney Channel. It wasn’t long before Disney took notice, giving her small parts on shows like Bizaardvark and Raven’s Home and ultimately putting her in the lead of her own series. Gabby Duran & The Unsittables, based on a children’s novel, starred Cantrall as a teenager tasked with a most unusual babysitting gig: watching a cadre of space aliens disguised as kids. Airing from 2019 to 2021, the show’s theme, “I Do My Thing,” was sung by Cantrall as well, fully establishing her as one of the newest singer/actors in the Disney stable. In 2023, she took on a recurring role in the fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, an unusually titled Disney+ tween hit about a group of students putting on an adaptation of the popular 2000s Disney hit at the “real” high school that the film was based on. (The slightly confusing premise was overshadowed by the breakout musical career of one of the series’ co-stars, Olivia Rodrigo, who left for a full turn into pop stardom before Cantrall's season aired.)Soon enough, another Disney vehicle came calling for Cantrall. The Descendants film series remixed decades of Disney animated classics, imagining a fictional fantasy world where all of the films’ heroes and villains eventually had children who attended high school together. In 2024, Cantrall starred in the series’ fourth installment, Descendants: The Rise of Red, co-starring Rita Ora as her mother and Brandy as Cinderella (reprising her role from Disney’s 1997 adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical). In between and during her tenures on these shows, Cantrall released singles both for Disney (including a 2019 cover of “Sucker,” a chart-topping comeback single for former Disney act the Jonas Brothers) and on her own (the edgier “Switch Phones” in 2021) and “Texts Go Green” in 2023). In 2023, while sidelined from acting during the SAG-AFTRA strike, she made her boldest original musical statement with the EP 10 Minute Songs: she asked for a three-word prompt on social media, and would take ten minutes to write a song using those words. (She also released some covers that year, including takes on Ella Mai's “Boo’d Up” and Ariana Grande's “Santa Tell Me.”) In 2024, she released some original material for her debut album, slated for a 2025 release, with the singles “Goodie Bag” and “Boy for a Day,” the latter of which took her ‘90s and 2000s pop idolatry to new heights with a co-writing/co-producing credit from Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins.
