Self Esteem

Indie/pop singer songwriter Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka Self Esteem) uses the refined songwriting ability she picked up in Slow Club and garnishes it with electronic pop trappings. As part of Slow Club, Taylor's music leaned more toward indie and folk, but as Self Esteem, she borrows heavily from R&B and bombastic pop. Her debut solo album, Compliments Please, found her writing from a more personal position, while she found her stride with 2021's Prioritise Pleasure, and 2025's Complicated Woman. After more than a decade operating as a duo in Slow Club alongside Charles Watson, Taylor found herself pulling into her own lane with Slow Club's 2016 album One Day All of This Won't Matter Anymore, as songs written by Taylor and Watson were pulling in different directions. The duo parted ways in 2017 to work on solo material, with Taylor's debut single as Self Esteem, "Your Wife," arriving later the same year. Over the next two years, Taylor toured and worked on her debut full-length, 2019's Compliments Please, which was produced by Dave Mclean (Django Django). It was Taylor's sophomore album, the Johan Hugo-produced 2021 release Prioritise Pleasure that earned her numerous plaudits for her confessional take on alternative pop and R&B. Hitting the U.K. Top 20 upon release and being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, the album went on to feature in many year-end lists. The following year, Taylor wrote the soundtrack for the West End production of Suzie Miller's Prima Facie. Touring followed over the next few years, with a massive sold-out jaunt across the U.K. and numerous festival slots. At the end of 2023, Taylor joined the cast of Cabaret, alongside Jake Shears, playing Sally Bowles. After six months in the role, she returned to the studio, once again with Hugo, to start work on her third album. The resulting Complicated Woman, which included the confessional and empowering tracks "69" and "Focus Is Power," was issued in early 2025.
