Arista
Arista Records, an American label based in New York, was founded in 1974 by Clive Davis as part of his vision to revitalize Columbia Pictures' music division. Originally distributed by BMG Records, Arista quickly gained prominence by signing an eclectic mix of artists, including Carlos Santana, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Alan Parsons, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston. Whitney Houston would become one of the best-selling artists of all time, with over 220 million records sold. However, Arista also became infamous for signing Milli Vanilli, the R&B duo at the center of a scandal when it was revealed they hadn’t sung a single note on their six-times-platinum album All or Nothing. In 2008, Arista was acquired by Sony Music Entertainment, absorbed into the Jive Label Group, and temporarily lost its name. In 2018, the iconic label was revived and now focuses on a fresh generation of talent, including acts like Måneskin and Lola Brooke.
