St. Lenox

St. Lenox is the indie pop solo project of New York-based singer/songwriter Andrew Choi. Possessed of a distinctively powerful voice, rich melodicism, and gift for literate storytelling, Choi's music ranges from dry wit to catharsis to earnest and deeply personal observations. His unique vision of the American experience has manifested itself across critically acclaimed albums like 2021's Ten Songs of Worship and Praise for Our Tumultuous Times and 2024's Ten Modern American Work Songs.The son of Korean immigrants, Choi grew up in Iowa, training as a concert violinist at Juilliard for a time and eventually earning a philosophy degree from Ohio State University. While in Columbus, he began writing and recording the songs that would become the music of St. Lenox. An arresting blend of classic pop, folk, soul, electronic, and rock, Choi's songs paint vivid pictures of American life as viewed through the lens of a second-generation immigrant. After moving to New York and beginning a career as a corporate attorney, he recorded Ten Songs About Memory & Hope, his debut as St. Lenox. Released in 2014 via Columbus indie Anyway Records, the album bore a vaguely futuristic tone and a philosophical bent, earning plenty of critical attention and comparisons to everyone from John Darnielle to Cee Lo Green. He followed up two years later with the similarly dramatic Ten Hymns from My American Gothic, a thematic observation on contemporary American life intended as a 70th birthday gift to his immigrant father. For his third effort as St. Lenox, Choi collated his personal observations on matters of love and professional success into another loosely themed set, resulting in 2018's Ten Fables of Young Ambition and Passionate Love. In keeping with his now-established album format, Choi's fourth album, 2021's Ten Songs of Worship and Praise for Our Tumultuous Times was a spiritual album of sorts, exploring a wide range of religious concepts. Three years later, work became the focus of the fifth St. Lenox album. Released in October 2024, Ten Modern American Work Songs examined Choi's own law career as a New York attorney, describing in vivid detail everything from incurring massive student debt to realizing professional ambitions and balancing his creative life.
