Sad Alex
In her indie pop tunes, L.A.-based singer Sad Alex deals with heartbreak and other personal emotions with equal amounts of confessional sincerity and playfully witty humor: she can write a touching song about being ghosted and then churn out a throwaway tune with lyrics entirely consisting of negative online comments to her music. Born Alex Saad in Delaware, she began to release a few electro-pop singles as Alxxa while also working as a songwriter for the likes of Kelly Rowland. In 2019, she reinvented herself as Sad Alex, signing with Red Bull Records and releasing singles like "Routine" and "New Heartbreak." Clever songs such as "Stockholm's a Ghost Town" or "I'm Glad That You Found Someone" paved the way for her first EP, Crydancing (2021). Follow-up singles like "Ur Not an Asshole", "Hot Priest," and "Everything Is Fine" were combined into her first album, I Thought That I'd Know by Now, in 2024.Sad Alex was born Alexandra Grace Saad in Delaware, started playing the piano at five, and wrote her first song, "Bad Day," when she was 12. She studied physics at the Loyola University in Maryland but decided to pursue a musical career and moved to Los Angeles. As Alxxa, she released her first electro-pop single, "Fire," in early 2016. It was soon followed by songs like "Nobody," "Body," and "Rearview." Her first and only EP as Alxxa, Body, was released in 2018. At the same time, she worked as a songwriter, working with Kelly Rowland on the songs "Don't You Worry" and "Diamonds" or co-writing Niki Zefanya and Rich Brian's "Shouldn't Couldn't Wouldn't."Saad started performing as Sad Alex in 2019, opting for a more indie-leaning sound and more personal material. Along with singles like "Routine," "New Heartbreak," or "Mess Without U," she also started an EP series called Songs That You'll Probably Never Hear to present demos and unreleased sketches. She got signed to Red Bull Records, and while the COVID-19 pandemic's arrival in 2020 halted all touring plans, Alex kept releasing new singles like "Stockholm's a Ghost Town," "I'm Glad That You Found Someone," "Dating Myself," and "California Queen" while also collaborating with artists like Wayne Regretzky ("Don't Make Me Miss You") and appearing on Pulko's single "High Hopes" along with rapper Duckwrth. After releasing her first EP, Crydancing, in 2021, Sad Alex continued to regularly present new singles like 2022's "Rugburn" and "High Sexpectations" and the next year's "Congrats I Hate U" and "Airbag." Several of her singles, including later releases "Hot Priest" and "Everything Is Fine," were collected on her debut album, I Thought That I'd Know by Now in 2024. From May to July that year, Alex toured the United States with indie rock band Arrows in Action.
