Heartworms
The project of British singer/songwriter/guitarist Jojo Orme, Heartworms connect the dots on a long continuum of goth-inspired U.K. post-punk acts from Joy Division to Interpol. Her blend of icy synths and choppy guitars color tracks like their breakthrough debut single “Consistent Dedication.” “May I Comply” and “Jacked” were the opening salvos from their debut album, Glutton for Punishment.Orme, born in Cheltenham, England, had a challenging upbringing, rebelling against her parents and not fitting in with schoolmates, partially due to her diverse ethnic background (Afghan and Pakistani on her father’s side, Danish and Chinese on her mother’s). During a particularly difficult period where she was grounded for a year for dating a boy, she used the time on her own to discover her songwriting voice, learning the guitar and falling for acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees, PJ Harvey and the Shins (whose 2017 album inspired Heartworms’ name). At the age of 14, she left home and entered foster care, deciding to live independently two years later and supporting herself by busking. In time, she graduated from Stroud College with a degree in production and performance, often clashing with male students who didn’t think she had enough talent. In due time, Orme proved her doubters wrong, releasing the arresting single “Consistent Dedication” in 2022 -- a cutting number dominated by a heavy bottom end, a spiky guitar figure, stabbing synths, and a theatrical half-spoken delivery that drew comparisons to indie darlings like Wet Leg. (Both groups share the same producer, Dan Carey.) “Consistent” was the lead track on their debut EP, A Comforting Notion, and Orme -- with a full backing band -- set out on tour, opening for acts like the Last Dinner Party and the Kills, and turning heads with her intense stage presence and unique personal style that blends goth and military accents (the latter owing a debt to her early enjoyment of the music of Michael Jackson and a lifelong interest in aircraft, even volunteering for the Royal Air Force Museum in her spare time). Non-album single “May I Comply” was released in 2023, and several singles in 2024 (“Jacked,” “Warplane”) set the stage for her debut album, Glutton for Punishment, released in the winter of 2025.
