The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is among Australia's leading symphonic ensembles, with roots stretching back to the early 20th century. It assumed its current form in 1946. The orchestra performs in the concert hall of the world-famous Sydney Opera House. It has a large recording catalog on Australia's ABC Classics and other labels, and in 2024, it was heard on arcing, stilling, bending, gathering, an album of works by composer Lisa Illean.The first Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed a concert in Sydney in 1905. It consisted of members of a pickup group organized to accompany the piano virtuoso Ignacy Jan Paderewski on his Australian tour the previous year. A more permanent group was formed in 1908. This ensemble gave subscription concerts, including the Australian premieres of many major works through the 1910s, but it dissolved in the early 1920s when most of its players jumped ship to join an orchestra at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. The direct ancestor of today's Sydney Symphony Orchestra was a group of players established in 1932 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission (now the Australian Broadcasting Corporation). This group grew rapidly, partly due to the fact that many leading European musicians fleeing instability at home came to Australia and made guest appearances.In 1946, the new Sydney Symphony Orchestra was formed from this group by an agreement between the ABC, the Sydney City Council, and the New South Wales state government. Eugene Goossens arrived in 1947 to become the new group's first chief conductor; he remained in the position until he departed in 1956 under the cloud of a pornography scandal. Various other conductors followed, all of them imported from England, continental Europe, or the U.S., until Charles Mackerras became the group's first Australian conductor in 1982. Major conductors since then have been Stuart Challender (1987-1991), who led the orchestra on its first U.S. tour, Edo de Waart (1993-2003), Gianluigi Gelmetti (2004-2008), Vladimir Ashkenazy (2009-2013), David Robertson (2014-2019), and, since 2022, Simone Young. On a 1981 album for the ABC Classics label, the orchestra backed contralto Lauris Elms on the album French & Italian Arias.During his tenure, Goossens began to agitate for the construction of an opera house in Sydney, and that long-held dream was realized with the 1973 opening of the architecturally world-class Sydney Opera House. The orchestra began to perform concerts in the building's 2,679-seat concert hall in the 1970s, and under de Waart, the opera house became the orchestra's full-time home. The group also performs in the Sydney City Recital Hall at Angel Place and the Sydney Town Hall and at the outdoor Symphony in the Domain Concert held at a large Sydney park.The orchestra has amassed a substantial catalog of recordings on ABC Classics, occasionally recording for other labels, including Chandos, BIS (on an album of music by composer Brett Dean), and Naxos as well. In 2008, the group backed pop star Olivia Newton-John on the album Olivia's Live Hits. By 2022, when the orchestra backed violinist Anthony Marwood on the album Beautiful Passing: Music for Violin and Orchestra by Steven Mackey, the group's catalog comprised more than 60 items. The orchestra returned in 2024 on the album arcing, stilling, bending, gathering, a collection of works by composer Lisa Illean.
