Deadletter

A south London group with Yorkshire roots purveys a similar brand of sardonic, moody post-punk to that favored by many U.K. guitar acts who sprang forth in the late 2010s and early 2020s.Zach Lawrence (vocals), Alfie Husband (drums), and George Ullyott (bass), were each born in the late '90s and raised in three different Yorkshire towns. They collaborated as teenagers in the local punk act Mice on Mars before upping sticks to London in August 2017. In the capital, Will King -- a guitarist two years their senior -- became a key acquaintance and ultimately helped comprise the core Deadletter quartet when they formed in early 2020. Their self-released debut single -- May 2020's spiky, sarcastic "Good Old Days" -- achieved a play on BBC Radio 6 Music. Further deadpan social commentary came in the form of September's "Fit for Work," Deadletter's first track to employ their signature use of a saxophone. That single not only garnered plays by 6 Music's Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, but also hit the airwaves on BBC Radio 1. January 2021's strident and propulsive "Fall of the Big Screen" went on to repeat that feat, and was followed that July by the daring, start-stop "Monday Night Terrors." The following month, James Bates joined as a second guitarist, and that September they met the music journalist and saxophonist Poppy Richler for the first time, at the End of the Road Festival.Moving on from self-released singles, early 2022 brought Deadletter's first material to be issued on other labels. The Bloc Party-like "Pop Culture Connoisseur" appeared on Nice Swan in March, while Make-A-Dance released "Line the Cows" that May. Next, they struck a deal with So Recordings. Richler joined just ahead of sessions for their danceable, November 2022 Heat! EP, while Bates was replaced by Sam Jones before its release. The EP was promoted with a prestigious tour opening for So labelmates Placebo. Two 2023-issued, standalone singles -- "The Snitching Hour" and "Degenerate Inanimate" -- represented their recording activity for that year. Then, while a trio of mid-2024 singles initially appeared on August’s More Heat!, the entire contents of that EP eventually formed part of their Jim Abbiss-produced, September 2024 LP Hysterical Strength. The album earned a Top 20 place on the Scottish album chart and although Richler appeared throughout, she left Deadletter before the record was released.
