Daath
Dååth (rhymes with "goth" and is the Hebrew word for "knowledge") is an American death metal band from Georgia, created by guitarist Eyal Levi and keyboardist/vocalist Mike Kameron after the breakup of their Dirt Nap project. The band's sound equates classic American technical death metal, thrash, and prog metal surrounding dirty vocals. Futility, their 2003 debut album, was issued independently. After a handful of singles and splits, they released 2007's The Hinderers. On 2009's The Concealers for Roadrunner, vocalist Sean Farber and Kameron were replaced by vocalist Sean Zatorsky and second guitarist Emil Werstler. This roster engineered a deal with Century Media to distribute and promote their Roadrunner recordings for the release of 2010's Dååth. In 2023 they debuted almost an entirely new (sextet) lineup, with Levi and Zatorsky added to the veteran members. They followed the singles with long-player The Deceivers in 2024.Dååth was formed by childhood friends Eyal Levi (guitar), Mike Kameron (keyboards, vocals), and Sean Farber (vocals) while the three were students together at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Originally called Dirtnap, the trio wound up leaving school to concentrate on the band full-time, eventually making their way back to Atlanta, Georgia. From here they sought to carve out a distinct sound in the extreme metal world, perfecting their unique blend of death, thrash, and black metal with symphonic and electronic elements. Their name, Dååth, is Hebrew for knowledge (as in the kind not usually obtained by the masses), and the guys were also heavily influenced by the teachings of the Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), although they didn't identify with any particular religion. Dååth simply strove to combine their headbanging grooves with a purposeful message, feeling that they could act as a "doorway between instinct and intellect." Dååth released an album in the early 2000s before being brought to the attention of Roadrunner Records by guitarist-turned-producer James Murphy (Disincarnate, Obituary, Death, etc.) after he worked with them on ten songs in 2005. The sextet ultimately signed to the label in the spring of 2006 and went back into the studio with Murphy to finish up a few more songs for their upcoming debut. By now the core trio was rounded out by lead guitarist Emil Werstler, bassist Jeremy Creamer, and drummer Kevin Talley (who replaced Matt Ellis). With additional studio help from Colin Richardson and Andy Sneap, their album The Hinderers -- whose lyrics were based on the Kabbalistic concept of an inverted Tree of Life, which each of the 13 songs representing one of the points on the tree -- appeared in March 2007, and was followed a couple of months later by Dead on the Dancefloor, a three-track tour EP. Dååth supported it on dates with Job for a Cowboy and the Acacia Strain before heading over to the U.K. with Unearth. They returned in 2008 with a strategically released clutch of singles before issuing The Concealers, with vocalist Sean Zatorsky and second guitarist Emil Werstler replacing Kameron. In the midst of their global support tour, they issued the four-track The Concealers B-Sides while on the road. The eponymously titled Dååth appeared in 2010 as a combined release from Roadrunner and Century Media, co-produced and co-engineered by Mark Lewis and Levi. After touring, the band essentially split and didn't return until 2023, issuing a handful of singles with a sextet lineup that included only Zatorsky and Levi. In May 2024, this lineup released The Deceivers on Metal Blade.
