Habibi
Brooklyn-based indie quintet Habibi has grown from straightforward garage rock beginnings into more refined material and expanded instrumentation that reflected their Middle Eastern background on their 2020 sophomore album Anywhere But Here. By the time of 2024's Dreamachine, they had added dance music and vintage synth sounds to their repertoire. Habibi was formed in the spring of 2011 by Detroit expatriates Rahill Jamalifard and Lenaya Lynch and their simple and infectious pop melodies were delivered with punkish attitude and '60s girl group-style hooks. Jamalifard took lead vocal duties, Lynch played guitar and sang, and the lineup was rounded out by drummer Karen Isabel and bassist Erin Campbell. They played often around the New York City area, eventually releasing several tracks in the form of 7" singles and online streams. They participated in South by Southwest and toured with like-minded acts such as King Tuff; by 2014, they'd released a self-titled debut album of their dreamy-eyed and dancey pop on Burger Records. In 2015, they joined forces with La Luz to release a split single. In the years that followed, Jamalifard released a self-titled 2017 album with a side project called Roya, who were joined by additional guitarist Leah Fishman. A four-song EP, Cardamom Garden, arrived in 2018. After a round of international touring, Habibi set to work on their sophomore album, exploring a wider range of instrumentation and arrangement than before. The more refined Anywhere But Here arrived in early 2020, expanding from the band's garagey beginnings with Middle Eastern instrumentation in some songs. By the time the band was ready to record their third album, the lineup had shifted, with drummer Lyla Vander (who had also played in Roya), bassist Yukary Morishima, and guitarist Ana Becker joining Jamalifard and Lynch. After spending much of the pandemic living together in upstate New York -- during which time Jamalifard began recording and releasing trip-hop-influenced indie pop under the name Rahill -- they traveled to producer Tyler Love's Brooklyn studio to work on a set of songs that saw them adding disco and dance punk influences as well as an increased reliance on synthesizers. They were also joined by longtime collaborator Jay Heiselmann and MGMT's James Richardson, who provided instrumental support. The album, titled Dreamachine, was released in May of 2024.
