Declan J Donovan

Recalling a string of earnest U.K. singer/songwriters of the mid-2010s including Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi, Declan J Donovan won fans over with heartfelt balladry inspired by the triumphs and trials of relationships experienced by himself along with friends and family. Songs like “Fallen So Young,” “Perfectly Imperfect,” and “Tangerine Skies” have earned the British tunesmith viral popularity and a stalwart fan base since his earliest days recording music in the years before the COVID-19 lockdown.Donovan, born in the west Essex town of Harlow in 1996, found songwriting to be a meaningful way of communicating his feelings after being drawn to the work of such thoughtful musicians as Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver, and City & Colour. He was so connected to the songwriting process that, when his brother asked him to be the best man at his wedding, he wrote an original song called “Fallen So Young” instead of toast. Uploading it to SoundCloud, he found it resonated with enough listeners to fill the wedding venue many times over. His rise from there was meteoric: after independently releasing more songs in 2018 like the well-received “Pieces,” the unsigned Donovan was invited to perform at BBC Radio 1’s Biggest Weekend Festival on the same day as luminaries like Taylor Swift and Florence + the Machine. Within a year, he’d ink a deal with Epic Records, releasing favorites like “Vienna” and the EP Homesick (which featured “Vienna” and “Pieces”). Even the COVID-19 lockdown didn’t stop him from releasing more music, like the popular “Tangerine Skies” and “Fighting with Myself.” In 2022, 15 of his songs -- including “Fallen So Young,” “Pieces,” “Vienna,” and “Tangerine Skies” -- appeared on his self-titled album. More singles followed, including “Hungry Heart,” “Happy Without Me,” and the wedding dance-ready “More Than a Feeling.”
