Erol Alkan
Erol Alkan is a major figure in the alternative dance scene, through his remix and production work, wide-ranging DJ sets, influential club nights, and Phantasy Sound label. First known for running Trash, a London club night which helped give rise to electroclash and the garage rock revival, he also produced bootleg mash-ups as Kurtis Rush, and released mix CDs like 2005's A Bugged Out Mix/A Bugged In Selection. In addition to his remixes for the Chemical Brothers, Justice, Interpol, and many others, he produced music by bands such as Mystery Jets and Late of the Pier, and formed the psychedelic group Beyond the Wizards Sleeve. He's frequently worked with electro-house producer Boys Noize, beginning with the 2009 single "Waves," and has issued several singles on his own, including 2021's "Automatic" and 2024's "A Hold on Love (Reworks)."Erol Alkan began DJ'ing at indie nightclubs in London in 1993. He was a resident at club night Going Underground in 1995, and he re-launched it under the name Trash in 1997, becoming its lead promoter and main DJ. His DJ mixes became the talk of the town during the great electroclash/dance-punk movement of the early 2000s, and he soon found himself playing some of the top clubs in the world. He also recorded mash-up remixes under the name Kurtis Rush, with his most popular one being "Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head," which combined Kylie Minogue's chart-topper "Can't Get You Out of My Head" with New Order's legendary "Blue Monday." Kylie performed the mash-up live at the 2002 BRIT Awards. Alkan's first mix CD, One Louder, was given away free with copies of the dance music glossy Muzik in 2003, and the magazine named him breakthrough DJ of the year. He followed that mix two years later with A Bugged Out Mix/A Bugged In Selection for !K7. It was also during this time that Alkan found himself in demand for remixes, with his first big mix being the smash dancefloor hit "The Rocker" by German electronic duo Alter Ego. This led to other remixes for indie rockers Death from Above 1979 and Franz Ferdinand; indie pop stars Annie, Bloc Party, and Hot Chip; and established electronic heroes Daft Punk and Chemical Brothers. He formed the psychedelic duo Beyond the Wizards Sleeve with the Grid's Richard Norris, as well as the Phantasy Sound label. Trash ended its influential ten-year run in 2007. While Alkan continued to remix numerous artists, he stepped into producing for himself and others, achieving some of his greatest success with Mystery Jets' Twenty One, Late of the Pier's Fantasy Black Channel, and the Long Blondes' Couples. The first of several singles with Boys Noize, "Waves," appeared in 2009. Further singles included the 2011 collaboration with Jarvis Cocker, "Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)," and 2012's "Roland Rat." Alkan mixed I Love Techno 2012 for Lektroluv and returned to !K7 for Another "Bugged Out" Mix & "Bugged In" Selection. A solo EP Illumination appeared in 2013. His remix of Tame Impala's "Be Above It" became a dancefloor hit, while 2014 saw the release of Fabriclive 77, his entry in the Fabric label's long-running mix series, and a handful of remixes for Manic Street Preachers, Klaxons, and the Emperor Machine. Around this time, he and Norris decided to make a full-length Beyond the Wizards Sleeve album and began rounding up vocalists like Jane Weaver, Blaine Harrison of Mystery Jets, Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and Holly Miranda. The record, The Soft Bounce, was released on Alkan's own Phantasy Sound label in mid-2016. Soon after the promotional duties for the record were done, Alkan headed to the studio to produce Ride's 2017 comeback album, The Weather Diaries. Later in 2017, he released a 20-track collection of his remixes done between 2005 and 2015 under the title Reworks, Vol. 1 on Phantasy Sound. Solo single "Spectrum" appeared in 2018, and Alkan co-produced Gabe Gurnsey's Physical that year. He produced a second album for Ride, This Is Not a Safe Place, in 2019. Alkan was one of several producers who worked on Duran Duran's 2021 album Future Past. He also released the solo single "Automatic" that year. He remixed songs by Working Men's Club, Confidence Man, the Chemical Brothers, and others. In 2024, he released a single of reworked versions of his earlier track "A Hold on Love."
