Coki

Coki, whose real name is Dean Harris (born in Croydon on August 26, 1980), is a British DJ, producer and MC, considered one of the pioneers of dubstep. Active since the early 2000s, he first came to prominence as a member of the Digital Mystikz duo, which he formed with Mala (Mark Lawrence) as part of the DMZ collective alongside Loefah. It was around their DMZ parties, held in Brixton from 2005, that dubstep acquired a clear identity and a passionate fan base. Coki's style quickly stood out for its radical approach to bass, a sound that is heavy, punchy and very direct, contrasting with the more meditative and spiritual dimension of Mala's productions. His tracks have had a lasting impact on the history of the genre, with titles such as Haunted, Tortured (2006) and the influential Night (2008), produced with Benga, becoming one of the major anthems of the first wave of dubstep and helping to popularize the sound far beyond London's borders. Alongside his activities with Digital Mystikz, Coki also released solo records on iconic labels such as DMZ Records and Deep Medi Musik, where he deployed an aesthetic characterized by aggressive bass lines, syncopated rhythms and raw energy that influenced a whole generation of producers. His contribution was crucial to the emergence of "wobble" and the more physical sounds of dubstep, which paved the way for the genre's international expansion in the late 2000s. Although he has remained more discreet in the media than some of his contemporaries, Coki retains a special aura in the underground scene, respected for his fidelity to the roots of dubstep and for his central role in the development of this unique sonic language born of London clubs.
