Dope Lemon

Already established internationally as one-half of the sibling indie pop duo Angus & Julia Stone, Australian singer/songwriter Angus Stone switched gears with his work under the pseudonym Dope Lemon, embracing a more woozy, electric, '90s slacker rock sound than on his other projects. Slick guitar playing, summery grooves, and dreamy-eyed vocal performances decorate Stone's highly stylized songwriting on albums like 2022's Rose Pink Cadillac and 2023's Kimosabè. Stone launched the Dope Lemon project in 2016, after about a decade of being primarily active with Angus & Julia Stone, though he had also released material as part of Lady of the Sunshine and under his own name. Dope Lemon's first album grew out of writing at home on his farm and jamming with friends in his recording studio on the property. Prior collaborators Rohin Brown (the Walking Who) and Elliott Hammond (the Delta Riggs) are among those to appear on the finished debut Honey Bones, which arrived on Universal in the spring of 2016. This was followed by the EP Hounds Tooth in early 2017 before Stone returned to working with his sister to record their fourth collaborative album, Snow. The Dope Lemon project was revived in early 2019 with the single "Hey You," accompanied by the announcement of its second studio LP, Smooth Big Cat, and an accompanying tour. With a more conceptual focus, the album revolved around the "Smooth Big Cat" persona, described by Stone himself as "a mystical creature of leisure." Continuing in the beach rock sound of its predecessors, the record was released on BMG in the summer of 2019. Stone began issuing singles from a third Dope Lemon album, Rose Pink Cadillac, in 2021, sharing new songs like "Every Day Is a Holiday" and "Kids Fallin' in Love" that carried a warm, lo-fi sound. The set was released in January 2022 and peaked at number one on the ARIA Vinyl Chart and ARIA Album Chart. Stone kept the momentum going in 2023 with Kimosabè, which included the vibrant "Miami Baby" and the reflective title cut. In 2025, Stone continued under the Dope Lemon moniker with the open-eyed Golden Wolf.
