5 Seconds Of Summer
Australia's 5 Seconds of Summer are a global chart sensation whose charismatic alt-pop sound builds upon their pop-punk and ebullient boy band roots. They burst onto the international music scene in the early 2010s, attracting fans with anthemic, hook-oriented songs that helped their self-titled 2014 debut album land at number one on the pop charts. While 2015's Sounds Good Feels Good retained their guitar-based sound -- scoring the group their second Australian and U.S. chart-topper -- they underwent a major pop reinvention in 2018 with their third number one, YOUNGBLOOD, which debuted a refined electronic dance-pop vibe. The group has continued to mature, exploring goth rock and industrial sounds on 2021's Calm, which again found them hitting the Top Ten in the U.K., Australia, and the United States. They further distinguished themselves by producing much of 2022's 5SOS5. On the heels of each member having released at least one solo album, they returned with 2025's Y2K- and cybercore-inspired Everyone's a Star! Formed in 2011, 5 Seconds of Summer features Luke Hemmings (lead vocals/guitar), Michael Clifford (guitar/vocals), Calum Hood (bass/vocals), and Ashton Irwin (drums/vocals). Initially a YouTube sensation for their acoustic covers of hit songs by Mike Posner, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, and others, they quickly caught the attention of Sony and signed a publishing deal, issuing two 2012 EPs, Unplugged and Somewhere New. The following year, they received a further boost after being asked to open for One Direction on tour, and shortly thereafter signed with Capitol Records. A third EP, She Looks So Perfect, arrived in 2014. A year later, they released their debut album, 5 Seconds of Summer, which promptly hit number one on the charts of more than a dozen countries around the globe. A world tour followed, after which they released the live concert album LIVESOS, which featured a cover of the Romantics' 1980 hit "What I Like About You." Following a break, they traveled to Los Angeles to work with producer John Feldmann (the Used, All-Time Low, Plain White T's), who had previously helmed most of the group's debut album. In 2015, 5 Seconds of Summer delivered their second full-length studio album, Sounds Good Feels Good, which found the group collaborating on songs with Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden, All-Time Low's Alex Gaskarth, the Monsters & the Strangerz, and others. Included were the songs "Permanent Vacation," which they had introduced while on tour, the lead single "She's Kinda Hot," and "Jet Black Heart." Upon its release, the album went to number one in the U.S., U.K., and Australia on the same day. The group embarked on a world tour that tallied over a hundred shows, including stops in Asia, Europe, North America, and their native Australia. At the conclusion of the Sounds Live Feels Live jaunt in late 2016, they returned to the studio to record album number three. In 2018, the band issued Youngblood, which featured production by Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub, Sir Nolan, and others. It found 5 Seconds of Summer committing to a more sophisticated dance-pop sound that they'd hinted at on Sounds Good Feels Good. Bolstered by the hit singles "Want You Back" and "Youngblood," the album became the group's third consecutive full-length studio effort to hit number one on the Billboard 200. The darkly emotive "Easier" followed in May 2019 as the lead single from the band's fourth full-length. Produced by Andrew Watt (Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Cardi B) and co-written with Charlie Puth, the song found them further developing their sound, and exploring '80s goth and industrial textures, avenues they would exploit on 2020's Calm. Buoyed by "Easier" and the spotlight tracks "Teeth," "No Shame," and "Old Me," Calm (an acronym of the bandmembers' first names often used by their fans) reached number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the charts in both the U.K. and Australia. In September 2020, drummer Irwin became the first member of the band to release a solo album with Superbloom. Hemmings soon followed suit in 2021, topping the Aria Albums chart with his solo debut, When Facing the Things We Turn Away From. In March 2022, 5 Seconds of Summer debuted the song "Complete Mess" as the first track off their fifth studio album, the aptly titled 5SOS5. A month later, they embarked on their Take My Hand World Tour, which had been postponed for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Released in September 2022, 5SOS5 was produced by the band and guitarist Clifford, along with contributions by Goldfinger's John Feldmann, Colin Brittain, Jon Bellion, and others. It topped the Australian albums chart and reached number two on the Billboard 200. The club-ready "Lighter," a non-album single collaboration with David Guetta and Galantis, appeared in March 2024. Around the same time, more solo projects kept the members busy, with Hemmings releasing the Boy EP, followed by Irwin's Blood on the Drums. Similarly, in April 2025, Hood made his solo debut, topping the ARIA chart with Order Chaos Order. A month later, Clifford followed with his own debut, Sidequest. That September, 5 Seconds of Summer marked their return as a group with "Not OK," the lead single off their sixth full-length album, Everyone's a Star! Produced in Nashville with Jason Evigan, Julian Bunetta, and John Ryan, it found the group poking wry fun at their boy band roots and embracing a sonically ear-grabbing, Y2K-inspired sound.
