Adult Mom
Adult Mom is the smart and intimate indie pop project of songwriter Stevie Knipe. By their fifth EP, 2014's Sometimes Bad Happens, the once bedroom solo project had stepped up the recording quality and were operating unofficially as a band. The project's full-length debut, 2015's Momentary Lapse of Happily, continued to navigate young adulthood through its lyrics. Adult Mom made their Epitaph label debut with Driver in 2021. Informed by a series of life-altering events, including cancer surgery, Natural Causes followed on the label in 2025.Established at Purchase College in 2012, Adult Mom released their first EP, bedroom recordings, in late 2012. Consisting of whispery, double-tracked vocals and simple guitar accompaniment, it was followed by the like-minded bstmommy and mom's day EPs in March and May of 2013, respectively. Knipe's final solo EP, i fell in love by accident, appeared in August 2013. Released within days of each other, Adult Mom next presented a split EP with Cyberbully Mom Club and the six-track Sometimes Bad Happens the following July. The latter was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Mike Dvorscak and featured Jen Sinski, KT Mcmanus, and Jack Tomascak as Knipe's backing band. Adult Mom's first album, Momentary Lapse of Happily, included contributions from all four prior collaborators as well as guitarist Bruce Hamilton. It was issued by Tiny Engines in mid-2015.Tiny Engines also released Adult Mom's second long-player, 2017's Soft Spots, which saw Knipe joined by Dvorscak, Hamilton, and drummer Olivia Battell. Following a split single with Laura Stevenson in late 2019, Knipe returned to the studio with co-producer Kyle Pulley (Hop Along, Diet Cig) to record their Epitaph debut, Driver. Along with a half-dozen other contributors, the 2021 release returned Battell on drums and introduced Allegra Eidinger on lead guitar.A series of major life events informed Knipe's next set of songs, which were written between 2020 and 2023. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and a breast cancer diagnosis in 2021 led not only to social isolation, intensive treatments, and an eventual double mastectomy but to reckoning with mortality, identity, past abusive relationships, and more. The nine-song Natural Causes arrived on Epitaph in 2025. Its tighter-knit lineup found Knipe backed by Eidinger, Battell, and new bassist Lily Mastrodimos, all of whom received producer credits alongside the album's mixing engineer Chance Cypress.
