Blue Foundation

Blue Foundation are a Danish band known for their cinematic fusion of dream pop, ambient electronic textures, and moody shoegaze-tinged songwriting. Led by singer/producer Tobias Wilner, they established themselves during the front-half of the 2000s, then rose to international popularity after being featured in films like Twilight and Miami Vice. In the next decade, Wilner split his time between side projects like Bichi and Ghost Society while issuing Blue Foundation albums like In My Mind I Am Free (2012) and Blood Moon (2016) on the band's own Dead People's Choice imprint. After several years of minimal activity, the band returned with the 2024 full-length Close to the Knife.Wilner, a Copenhagen-based singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, founded the group in 2000, taking influence from artists like Stereolab, Can, and My Bloody Valentine. He surrounded himself with a rotating cast of musicians on early releases like 2001's Blue Foundation and 2004's Sweep of Days, which often featured vocalist Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg. Over time, multi-instrumentalist Bo Rande became the group's other constant member, aside from Wilner. Blue Foundation's popularity began to grow internationally when they landed high-profile song placements in films like Miami Vice ("Sweep") and Twilight ("Eyes on Fire"). The latter also appeared on their breakout 2007 album Life of a Ghost. The song was later remixed by Zeds Dead under the title "Heads on Fire," expanding its reach even further. In 2009, Wilner started his own label, Dead People's Choice, in Copenhagen as a vehicle for releases by Blue Foundation and various side projects like Bichi and Ghost Society. Blue Foundation also reached a wider audience thanks to collaborations with Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon) and Jonas Bjerre (Mew) on the 2009 single Watch You Sleeping and in remixing Bjerre's "Window Pane," respectively. Wilner's 2011 soundtrack for the Danish documentary Tankograd came out under his Ghost Society moniker, though it also included a pair of tracks credited to Blue Foundation, further blurring the lines between his various pursuits. 2012's In My Mind I Am Free became the next official Blue Foundation album and featured a new vocalist, Sara Savery. The highly collaborative Blood Moon followed in 2016, collecting several of their previously released singles and included guests like Erika Spring (Au Revoir Simone), Findlay Brown, and Jonas Bjerre. After this, their output largely consisted of singles like "Where the End Begins" and "Shadow" as well as the 2018 EP Brother & Sister. Blue Foundation made a return to album-making in 2024 with the expansive Close to the Knife on Wilner's newer imprint KØN Records.
