Kaitlin Butts
A throwback to classic honky tonk spiked with a rebellious spirit indebted to Miranda Lambert, Kaitlin Butts possesses a high, keening voice and a knack for classic country tropes. This skill was showcased on her 2015 debut Same Hell, Different Devil and expanded on Roadrunner!, a 2024 concept album that functions as her answer record to Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma!Raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kaitlin Butts began singing as a child, raised on musical theater, pop, and alternative rock. She was drawn to country in her teens, gravitating toward Miranda Lambert in particular. Butts learned Lambert's songs as she took guitar lessons, which in turn inspired her to start writing her own material. Upon her graduation from Union High School in 2011, she attended the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma where she dabbled in indie rock in addition to country. Butts began working on her first album after earning her associate's degree, eventually cutting the record with producer Mike McClure at his Boohatch Studio. The resulting Same Hell, Different Devil appeared in February of 2015.2019's digital release of "White River" led to a series of three digital singles -- "How Lucky Am I," "White River (Remix)," and "Marfa Lights" -- in 2021. Butts quickly followed these singles with the mini-LP What Else Can She Do. Featuring "Blood," a song co-written with Pistol Annie Angaleena Presley and produced by Oran Thornton, What Else Can She Do arrived early in 2022. Butts wrapped up 2022 with the EP Sad Yeehaw Sessions. After a quiet 2023 -- she only released the EP OurVinylSessions and the single "Tomorrow Will Be Kinder" -- Butts kicked off 2024 with a cover of Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" with Disko Cowboy and French Horn Rebellion. She soon launched the cycle for her third album with the "Hunt You Down," a single that led to Roadrunner!, a clever autobiographical response to Oklahoma! that arrived in June 2024.
