<p><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><strong>MOBILE OPERATION... </strong>it&#39;s in the car, but we don&#39;t use it often.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif">Yaesu FTM-500DR.  I&#39;ve not really warmed up to VHF/UHF operations yet.  But it&#39;s in place when we need it.  We activate our APRS beacon (AE6PL-9) for our portable HF operations.  It is a very clean installation into our Honda Civic.  The FTM-500DR replaced our FTM-400DR that went belly up.  It was the perfect mobile radio for the car.  I&#39;m sorry to see it was discontinued.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><strong>PORTABLE OPERATION... </strong>for us, this is what the hobby is all about.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif">Here is where <a href="https://www.qrz.com/db/K6LIZ" target="_blank">K6LIZ</a> and I are having the most fun!  We&#39;re still giddy being on the business end of a pileup.  We recently learned how to operate effectively and comfortably from the back seat of our Honda Civic.  This is great when the weather is not too cooperative.  However, we prefer to operate outdoors whenever we can.</span></span></p>

Liz and I grew up here.  We met in 1974 working at <a href="http://www.city-data.com/orange-county-ca-restaurants/carls-jr-130.html" target="_blank">Carl&#39;s Jr #130</a>.  Always fond memories for us when we pass through the area.  Our setup was WAY too close to a SoCal Edison power plant.  We received decent signal reports, but we experienced very heavy QRN.  Another lesson learned... location, location, location.</span></span></div>

<p style="margin-left:40px"><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif">It took 2h 20m to log 24 contacts reaching as far as NH.  Heavy sigh... then I realized we had only been running on 5W.  Cranked up to 100W, painted myself stupid and logged at a much faster rate.  One more item for the setup checklist!  First activation for this park.  We had plenty of fun.  This is one of our favorite spots so far.  Very quiet and we had it all to ourselves.</span></span></p>

<p style="margin-left:40px"><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif">This was a 4.5 mile round-trip hike to the film set of the TV series <a href="http://www.malibucreekstatepark.org/MASH.html" target="_blank">M*A*S*H</a>.  There&#39;s a line of picnic tables under camo netting where the mess tent was in the TV series.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">We have a unique QSL card we use for park contacts... we get good reports about it.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">We love operating portable from parks and embrace the POTA and WWFF systems... we are still fairly new at it.  There are so many mistakes to make, and so much more to learn.  </span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Here are some tips for those of you wanting to participate in POTA/KFF (and I highly recommend doing this... it&#39;s really fun)</span></span></p>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Operating from parks makes YOU a hot commodity.  It&#39;s quite exciting being on the receiving end of a pileup!  This is a great way to get states, counties, grid rectangles and friends.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Notify the park in advance and get an official approval.  Key phrases for you... &quot;we are not a commercial station&quot;, &quot;we will not use any tree or park structure for our setup&quot;, &quot;we are promoting good will for the park system and for amateur radio&quot;, &quot;these aren&#39;t the droids you&#39;re looking for&quot;, &quot;we will not interfere with any park guest, but will happily answer any questions about what we&#39;re doing&quot;.  The first two are by far the most important.  The fourth one not so much.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Minimize your exposure to other park visitors.  Use headphones, don&#39;t run antenna cables across walking paths.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">We like to write down the calls and names of the regulars so we can readily acknowledge them.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Spot yourself, if you can.  If you cannot, announce a planned activation on the appropriate websites.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Confirm and monitor your setup!  I operated for hours with scant contacts before I realized my 100W rig was set for 5W output (but I did make a few contacts across the country which impressed me).  We also learned the hard way that TX power is significantly reduced as the battery voltage drops, and also as the rig gets warm... keep it in the shade!</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Secure your equipment.  On our portable table, packing tape has worked really well to hold loose meters/clocks in place.  The tape doesn&#39;t leave a residue.  Bring a tarp as last-second protection against rain/blowing dust/blood splatter.</span></span></li>
</ul>

	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Protect your equipment.  We use a lot of bubble-pak envelopes to help keep our small devices protected from being jostled around in transit</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">When using a paper log, we often ask for a name and state... that helps us check the log before we submit.  We just started to take our laptop for parks within cell phone range and can get Internet access with our Hot Spot.  We configured our N3FJP logbook to accommodate parks. We haven&#39;t had much success using a laptop for direct entry, but I&#39;m sure we&#39;ll get the hang of it.  Paper logs are so much easier (and more reliable) to use when there&#39;s two of us.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Check your log before submission.  Hunters only get credit if you get it right.</span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">​</span></span><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Keep the frequency active.  Once you have a good frequency you&#39;ll want to keep that frequency.</span></span></span></span></li>
</ul>

<ul>
	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Be a good steward for amateur radio.  Get some of the free fliers from <a href="https://www.arrl.org/shop/What-is-Ham-Radio-flyer-version-A-pack-of-25/" target="_blank">ARRL for handouts</a>.  Be prepared to handle inquisitive souls.  If you&#39;re running solo make some cards to hand out describing what you&#39;re doing and apologizing for not necessarily being able to answer questions.  It&#39;s great to work with a partner or a group to handle the questions.  If we&#39;re in a kid-rich environment we might print out a map of the US and mark the states we&#39;ve worked... just for show.</span></span></li>
</ul>

	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Bring a copy of your ham license.  We&#39;ve never been asked for it, but it seems like a good idea.</span></span></li>
</ul>

	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Understand the difference between the two systems.  <a href="https://parksontheair.com/" target="_blank">POTA</a> (Parks on the Air) is a US program and park designators are of the format K-XXXX.  10+ QSOs qualifies you for an activation and award counts.  <a href="http://wwff.co/" target="_blank">WWFF</a> (World Wide Flora and Fauna) program is a global system.  The US component of this system is designated <a href="http://wwff.co/tag/kff/" target="_blank">KFF</a>.  So the park designators are KFF-XXXX 44+ QSOs are required for activation awards.  The four digit numbers are often the same between the two systems, but not always.  The same adif log can be submitted to each entity (two different emails).</span></span></li>
</ul>

	<li><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Have fun!  Park hunters/activators are a relatively small group.  You can work your way up the food chain pretty fast.</span></span></li>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">The past year I started guitar lessons, and Liz started piano.  Our instructor has us working up some fun duets.  We have quite a ways to go to be presentable.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">I&#39;m planning to retire the end of January 2022, but in the meantime, I&#39;m an Engineering manager for piezoceramic and MEMS accelerometer design and manufacturing.  Here&#39;s my <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-leonhardt-424462a" target="_blank">LinkedIn Profile</a>.  If you have a rate-active pacemaker in your chest, there&#39;s a good chance that a sensor that measures activity is my design (and patent), and you&#39;re keeping AE6PL near and dear to your heart.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif"><span style="font-size:16px">Best of all, I&#39;m one lucky OM with my K6LIZ at my side.  I cannot overstate that.  We met in 1974 working at a Carl&#39;s Jr #130 in Huntington Beach, CA.  We were part of the inagural crew for that location when it opened.  She&#39;s amazing.  When we participate in POTA, we occasionally swap the microphone, so a spotted call might not reflect the current operator.  I sense a sort of disappointment when a hunter sees that Liz is spotted, but they get me.</span></span></p>
