The 1980s offered music listeners a new type of sound in terms of glam bands. Before, people glam bands meant over-the-top performances by rock bands. In the decade of excess, glam metal became the next big thing. Fusing hard rock and heavy metal, the best glam metal bands have songs that are still popular today, years after the initial release of those tracks. Glam metal bands put on decadent live shows and their wardrobes were as excessive as their guitar solos.

So who are the best glam metal bands? If you're starting a list of glam metal bands, you'd need to include the likes of Motley Crue, Skid Row and Ratt. These bands are known to many as some of the top glam metal bands whose music is still looked back fondly by music fans of their time. Many of these bands saw their popularity peak in the mid-1980s, except the Crue, who can rightfully claim to be one of the best glam metal bands.

That said, determining who should be considered among the top glam metal bands isn't easy, but this poll of readers should determine that. This list answers the questions "who are the best glam metal bands of all time?" and "who is the greatest glam metal musician ever?"If you know enough about the genre, please vote based on the quality of the band's music instead of just voting for the most popular glam metal bands that you might've heard of. If you notice a glam band missing, feel free to add them because this should include all glam metal bands. Jetboy is an American San Francisco-based hard rock band founded in 1983 by guitarists Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod. Jetboy got the attention of music fans and record executives alike in Hollywood during the mid-1980s. The band transplanted themselves to Los Angeles in 1986 after signing a deal with Elektra Records. Their musical influences ranged from punk rock to rock 'n' roll to blues. Their 1988 debut album Feel the Shake peaked at 135 on Billboard 200.After parting ways with original bass player Todd Crew in mid-1987, the band was joined by former Hanoi Rocks member Sami Yaffa. Yaffa, a member of one of the groups Jetboy had found most influential, was now a member of the band as their new bassist. In July 1987, Todd Crew died due to a drug overdose in the hotel room of Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Jetboy continued on into the 1990s before disbanding in 1992. However, over a decade later, Jetboy reconvened, toured and recorded a new EP, Off Your Rocker in 2010. Having been absent from the studio for some 20 years, Jetboy recorded Off Your Rocker in a fully organic mode. The band played all in the same room together in a "live-style" format in an effort to duplicate the way the songs were written, all together, in a true 1970's fashion where the band could feed off of one another's energy. Jetboy has continued to gain in popularity, and has continuously played to large crowds at festivals across the United States including Rocklahoma, The South Texas Rock Fest, Rock the Bayou & The M3 Festival two times. On June 1, 2012, Jetboy did a 25-year reunion for their debut album 'Feel The Shake' at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood. The show was also a release party for the movie Rock of Ages which featured a few images of Jetboy. The line-up for this show included all original members with a surprise appearance by their second bass player Sami Yaffa who is currently playing in the Michael Monroe Band. This was the first time they all shared the stage together in over 20 years. Jetboy plan to continue with the original line-up with Charles Norman on bass who replaced Yaffa for the Damnednation tour in 1989. On January 25, 2014, during NAMM weekend Jetboy supported Faster Pussycat at the Whisky A Go-Go to a sold out crowd to celebrate the club's 50-year anniversary. Jetboy geared up in late 2015 to bring their style of rock n roll to the stage again. The band performed at Riki Rachtman's Cathouse Live on August 15, 2015 at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, California. Three songs from Feel the Shake were featured in the 1989 movie The 'Burbs, starring Tom Hanks. They were "Bloodstone", "Locked in a Cage" and "Make Some Noise". The most commercially successful line-up was its original, which was a supergroup of four members of different progressive rock bands of the 1970s: lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton of King Crimson and U.K., guitarist Steve Howe of Yes, keyboardist Geoff Downes of Yes and the Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Their debut album, Asia, released in 1982, remains their best selling album and went to number one in several countries. The band underwent multiple lineup changes before the original four members reunited in 2006. As a result, a band called Asia Featuring John Payne exists as a continuation of John Payne's career as Asia's frontman from 1991 until Wetton's return in 2006. In 2013, the original line-up was broken once again when Howe retired from the band and was replaced by guitarist Sam Coulson. After a few years of inactivity, Billy Sherwood (of Yes and World Trade) replaced an ailing Wetton in Asia for a summer 2017 tour with Journey. Following Wetton's death the same year, the band went on hiatus again, re-emerging in 2019 with Sherwood permanently replacing Wetton on bass and with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal replacing both Wetton on vocals and Coulson on guitar.

Spinal Tap is a parody English heavy metal band that first appeared on a 1979 ABC TV sketch comedy pilot called The T.V. Show, starring Rob Reiner. The sketch, actually a mock promotional video for the song "Rock and Roll Nightmare", was written by Reiner and the band, and included songwriter/performer Loudon Wainwright III on keyboards. Later the band became the fictional subject of the 1984 rockumentary/mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap. The band members are portrayed by Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. This Is Spinal Tap was accompanied by a soundtrack album of the same name. In the years following the film's release, the actors have portrayed the band members at concerts and released music under the Spinal Tap name. Guest, McKean, and Shearer toured in the United States in April and May 2009 and performed as Spinal Tap in a "One Night Only World Tour" on 30 June 2009 at Wembley Arena in London, three days after playing the Glastonbury Festival. Support at Wembley Arena came from the same trio's fictitious folk music band The Folksmen.

However, the rise of the grunge sound in 1991 saw Tyketto's hopes of a big breakthrough begin to recede. Jimi left the band and was replaced by Jamie Scott. Their second album was rejected by Geffen and finally emerged in 1994 under the title Strength in Numbers on CMC International in the USA and Music for Nations elsewhere in the world. The following year, Vaughn left the band to look after his wife, who had developed cancer, and was replaced by former Tall Stories vocalist Steve Augeri. Killer Dwarfs (stylized as KiLLeR DWaRfS) are a Canadian heavy metal band who formed in late 1981 in Oshawa, Ontario, and who enjoyed moderate success in their native Canada in the 1980s. Known for their offbeat sense of humor (all band members adopted the surname "Dwarf"), they were nominated for two Juno Awards during their career. Though not British, they were sometimes compared to NWOBHM acts such as Iron Maiden and Saxon. The original lineup consisted of Russ Graham (vocals), and Darrell Millar (drums), along with Bryce Trewin (guitar) and Ange Fodero (bass). Their self-titled 1983 debut album was nominated for a Juno Award and radio stations in the US, particularly in Texas, started to play their album. Trewin and Fodero left the band shortly afterward, and were replaced by guitarist Mike Hall and bassist Ron Mayer. This classic lineup released the band's breakthrough 1986 album, Stand Tall, followed by Big Deal in 1988 and Dirty Weapons in 1990. The band received much recognition in Canada and the United States during the 80's, and their videos were in regular rotation at MuchMusic and on the MTV program Headbanger's Ball. Gerry Finn replaced Hall in 1992, and the album Method to the Madness was released later that year. The band toured for several years but then parted ways. During the mid-to-late 1990s, the band members pursued other projects. Graham formed a band called PennyBlack, and Hall and Finn both became members of the legendary Canadian metal band Helix. Millar went on to drum for the southern rock band Laidlaw, before forming his own Bon Scott era AC/DC tribute band Autobon, which went on to become Automan.ca, where Millar recorded original material. Mayer became a businessman and moved to the U.S. In 2001, however, the lineup of Graham, Millar, Hall and Mayer reunited to tour across North America. Recordings from these shows make up the live album Reunion of Scribes: Live 2001. The band again went on hiatus until 2013, when Graham, Millar, Finn and Mayer released a previously recorded album Start @ One that was recorded in 1993 but never released. Also in 2013, Graham released Wireless, in which he sings acoustic versions of popular Killer Dwarfs songs with guest musicians. On May 26, 2014, the band was returning home after concluding a US tour at the Rocklahoma festival in Pryor, OK. While passing through a construction zone along Interstate 70 in Indiana, the band's pickup truck, driven by Fenton, struck two other vehicles and crashed into a ditch. Graham was airlifted to a hospital in Terre Haute where he received 24 stitches to close a gash on the left side of his forehead. The rest of the band walked away with cuts and bruises. In a radio interview a month later, Graham said he was healing well, but the area around the gash was still completely numb. On January 5, 2018 it was announced that Killer Dwarfs had signed to Megadeth bassist David Ellefson's EMP Label Group, who would release a live album, NO GUFF', on Friday, April 13, as well as reissuing the bands independently released START@ONE and vocalist Graham's solo debut Wireless, plus new 2019 studio LPS from Killer Dwarfs and Russ Dwarf.
