A tale of intergenerational BIID over centuries. In prep school I became a close friend of Brian Meadows. His mobility impairment was obvious. Over time its cause became evident as he described a peculiar turn of mind shared by generations of privileged ancestors whose story reaches back well into 18th century France. This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons or situations other than those that are clearly general knowledge is pure coincidence. The story is excerpted and adapted from my much longer novel "Buddies." I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I have writing it.

In a technologically advanced monarchy, fear is maintained through spectacle. Every few years, six "traitors" are selected and released into the country. They are hunted by the king's sons in a nationally broadcast event. Officially, it proves the crown's strength. Unofficially, it keeps the population too terrified to rebel. No one has ever survived. Until now.

What of war, what of peace? No dear viewer this is not about victory. But how defeat was written, foretold, and although you resist. The answer to tyrants is to bleed them. So what of your sword? What of your courage to stand against the rising tide o, reader mine. For you have breath left, and a heart that still works. Yet here you stay, comfortable in your misery. A shame.
