Alphabetic and numeric code

[edit]

ISO 4217 defines both an alphabetic and a numeric code. Usage as well as its regular expression indicate that this property (P498) is about the alphabetic code. I propose to clarify that in the description and potentially in the label. I added an alias "ISO 4217 alphabetic code" which could be promoted to be the label. If we want to store the numeric code, too, then we should propose a new property ("ISO 4217 numeric code"). Toni 001 (talk) 10:07, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See the definition tables (Standard source) at ISO 4217 (Q37431). At best the numeric code is equal to the alphanumeric code (when applying correct specifications), but its definitions are not well described and do not add any useful ID or precision.
So I'd oppose adding these, as --even ideally-- they do not add reliable information. DePiep (talk) 07:22, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Chemical elements as currency

[edit]

For the four precious metal (Q271449)'s that have an actual currency (Q8142) code, there now exist separate WD items:

XPD palladium (Q114757321) (as element: palladium (Q1089))
XPT platinum (Q27882222) (as element: platinum (Q880))
XAU gold (Q114757615) (as element: gold (Q897))
XAG silver (Q114757985) (as element: silver (Q1090))

The ISO code has been moved to those new items. The items have instance of (P31): currency (Q8142).

Background, chemistry: over at WP:Chemistry there is discussion (and ambition) to separate the abstract atom-definitions from the RealLife substance item definition. In this case: the chemical element (Q11344) gold (Q897) is different from the substance (Q378078) of pure gold (eg, coins).

Background, ISO 4217: Item ISO 4217 (Q37431) now has the formal sources for its definition (Lists One, Two, Three, & amendments). The source states that there are just four elements defined as currency. Having these four substance items, allows this ISO 4217 property to remove the "P31 chemical element (Q11344)" altogether (preventing say aluminium (Q663) aluminium to be included as ISO currency).

Assuming this is a stable and accepted change, we can remove the Domain requirement for "chemical element (Q11344)". No new P-check messages expected. DePiep (talk) 07:01, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done: removed exception to constraint (P2303) from subject type constraint (Q21503250): chemical element (Q11344). Because: precious metal (Q271449) like palladium (Q114757321) now distinct item from element (the "as investment" has property currency (Q8142)). DePiep (talk) 18:33, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ISO 4217 does not require unit symbol

[edit]

At the moment, there is requirement "Items with this property should also have unit symbol (P5061)". However, I think this is not in place.

Quite the opposite: this ISO has nothing to do with outside defined/used unit symbols. Within this currency system, the unit used is the ISO code: "USD 25.00 = ABC 123.60".

On top of this, unit symbols can be defined sloppy and confusingly bad. Also, multi-language and singular/plural symbols come in play. See en:Currency_symbol.

I propose to remove this requirement from this property. A currency item should take care by other means & routes. DePiep (talk) 08:18, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I will remove the constaint. DePiep (talk) 21:03, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal: remove requirement unit symbol (P5061)

[edit]

"country required" better be "entity required"

[edit]

Requirement "Items with this property should also have country (P17)". But ISO 4217 (Q37431) names these "entity", which then can also be a region (see euro) or organisation (bank institution, see ...). Probably the requirement should be widened. DePiep (talk) 07:31, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
