Upgrade to this strong, fire-resistant armor set
PDF download Download Article

Are you trying to make Netherite armor in Minecraft, but you're not sure where to start? Unlike other armor sets, Netherite armor can't be crafted. Instead, you must upgrade a set of Diamond armor with Netherite Ingots at a Smithing Table to get this powerful and elusive armor set. While it is a little bit of a process to get Netherite armor, you'll get it in no time with a little perseverance.

Items Needed to Make Netherite Armor

  • 4 Netherite Ingots (16 Netherite Scraps & 16 Gold Ingots)
  • 4 Upgrade Smithing Templates
  • Diamond Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, and Boots
  • Smithing Table
  • Optional: 3 Netherrack & 21 Diamonds (to duplicate Smithing Templates)
  1. You'll need a Diamond Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, and Boots. If you don't already have a set of Diamond armor, you'll need 24 Diamonds to craft it.[1]
    • You'll need 5 Diamonds for the helmet, 8 Diamonds for the chestplate, 7 Diamonds for the leggings, and 4 Diamonds for the boots.
    • Diamond armor can be crafted in the 3x3 crafting grid.
    • You don't have to do this step first, but you will need to get a full set of Diamond armor before you can make Netherite armor.
  2. You must get Netherite Scraps to create Netherite armor, which can only be found in the Nether. To access the Nether, you must go through a Nether Portal.
    • You can build a Nether Portal with 14 Obsidian configured in a 4x5 rectangle (though you can leave out the corners and create a portal with just 10 Obsidian). Once the structure is built, light it on fire to activate the Nether Portal.[2]
    • You can also access the Nether by fixing a Ruined Portal, if you've found one.

  3. Ancient Debris is an ore found in the Nether. It's a scatter ore, which means it is generated in dispersed clusters.[3]
    • You can also use a Netherite Pickaxe to mine Ancient Debris, if you have one.
    • If you use any other type of pickaxe, the mined Ancient Debris will drop nothing.[4]
  4. One Ancient Debris will be smelted into one Netherite Scrap when placed into a smelter with fuel.[5]
  5. Combine 4 Netherite Scraps and 4 Gold Ingots in the 3x3 crafting grid to make 1 Netherite Ingot. This recipe is shapeless, which means you don't need to put the materials in any particular configuration to craft the resulting item.
    • 1 Gold Ingot can be crafted with 9 Gold Nuggets, or by smelting 1 Gold Ore, Nether Gold Ore, Deepslate Gold Ore, or Raw Gold.[6]
  6. Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates can be found in Bastion Remnants. There is a 10% chance of finding one in a Hoglin stable chest, generic chest, and bridge chest, and a 100% chance of finding one in a treasure chest.[7]
  7. If you find one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, you can duplicate it with 7 Diamonds and 1 Netherrack. If you find 1 Smithing Template, you'll need 3 Netherrack and 21 Diamonds to duplicate it.
    • You can, alternatively, keep searching for more Smithing Templates in Bastion Remnants.
  8. You'll need 2 Iron Ingots and any 4 Planks to craft a Smithing Table. Alternatively, you can use a Smithing Table that spawns in Toolsmith houses in Villages or in Trail Ruins.[8]
  9. Place a Netherite Ingot, a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, and a piece of Diamond armor in the Smithing Table to create a piece of Netherite armor.
    • Repeat this step for the helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots to create a full set of Netherite armor.

You can't smelt any ore using a campfire, ancient debris included. Campfires can smelt any food, however.
