China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation’s (CRRC) unveiled the world’s first high-speed maglev transportation system with a speed of 600 km/h (373 mph) in Qingdao, East China’s Shandong Province on Tuesday. This transportation system would fill the gap between bullet trains that run at around 350 km/h (217 mph) and airplanes that cruise at 800 km/h (497 mph). Once complete, it can transport passengers from Shenzhen to Shanghai in just 2.5-hours instead of the normal 10-hours.

This train required a lot more work than initially planned, as CRRC technicians spent 19 months alone developing the magnetic poles for whirlpool brakes, which are capable of being recycled in a -25&Deg;C to 170&Deg;C environment and can withstand vibrations. Once the routes are setup, each train will come equipped with high-speed 5G for the Wi-Fi system, and passengers will even be able to charge their smartphones wirelessly.

The 600 km/h high speed maglev transportation system means that the complete set of high-speed maglev train technologies is further mature and closer to the commercial landing. The realization of fully independent and controllable technologies can significantly reduce the cost of technological application, and will facilitate large-scale application,” said Zhang Xiaoxing, a lecturer of the School of Architecture at the South China University of Technology, to the Global Times.
