About Pope Julius II
For almost a decade, Pope Julius II served as the head of the Catholic Church. Due to the period of his papacy (November 1503 to February 1513), the papal states (Italian Peninsula territories) were still in existence so he ruled over them as part of his responsibilities as the pope.
He is remembered for saving the papacy at a time when it was almost ruined by other European states. He also commissioned architectural and other art projects in the Vatican, such as the St. Peter’s Basilica.
Family Life
He was born Giuliano della Rovere as one of five children of Theodora Manerola and Raffaelo della Rovere.
When he was a cardinal, he had a daughter with a woman named Lucrezia Normani.
Death
He died on 21 February 1513 from a fever.
Trivia
The choice of the name Julius was inspired by Julius Caesar. His nickname was “The Fearsome Pope”.
