After growing up in Conroe, going to Austin College in Sherman, and spending a stint in San Antonio, Courtney moved to Dallas (by choice), where she's lived for the last decade to complete the trifecta of Texas cities a person could choose to live in (and if Austin takes that as an insult, they should). She's a freelance writer after turns as the editor for Eater's Texas region, and before that, covering music and Texas politics for Refinery29. She started her career at MTV, where her colleagues called her the "indie rock whisperer." The Shins really did change her life, kind of. She feels strongly that you can judge the quality of a Tex-Mex spot by its nachos.
