'Fist Of The Condor' (2023) Movie Review

When star Marko Zaror and writer/director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza team up, you damn well better believe we’re paying attention. When this Chilean duo gets together, we get movies like Kiltro, Mandrill, and Redeemer, among others, and rarely does Zaror get to shine as brightly as he does in these films. (Unless he’s facing off against Scott Adkins.) And their latest venture, Fist of the Condor, delivers just what fans want and expect. 

'Paid In Blood' (2021) Movie Review

Just a heads up right out of the gate, Paid in Blood has been marketed as a fast-paced action film, which it is decidedly not. Despite a few quick flurries, there’s really only one straight-up action scene. More than that, director Yoon Young-bin’s film, also known as Tomb of the River, aims to be more of a taut, sprawling underworld epic. It eternally lingers right on the verge, on the precipice of violence, but even punctuated by quite a few stabbings, they’re honestly pretty low-key as far as stabbings go.

'Russian Raid' (2021) Movie Review

It’s been said that the craziest action movies from around the globe come from the places with the least regulation, thus the most freedom for performers to do insane things that are probably way, way too dangerous to actually attempt. Whether or not that’s true, there’s clearly some stuff going on in Russia right now. Last year brought us Why Don’t You Just Die! and because there’s always room for more, now we have Russian Raid to gawk at and kick us in the face.

Someone finally got the memo to give Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead more toys to play with and hell yes. Synchronic, the duo’s follow up to The Endless, has been one of our most anticipated movies since it made the festival rounds last year. 2016’s Train to Busan is one of those zombie movies that comes along every few years and reminds everyone how good the genre can be. The South Korean horror film was a big international hit and now the sequel, Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula, is on the way, with another new trailer as proof.

Movie new has been pretty dead as of late, what with most of the movie industry worldwide being shut down due to COVID-19. Still, there were plenty of movies on the way, and a bunch remain en route. One we’re looking forward to around these parts is the South Korean zombie film Peninsula, a new horror set in the world of Train to Busan and now titled Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula. We finally got a look at trailer and damn, this is the stuff we’ve been waiting for.

'Freaks' (2018) Movie Review

With the glut of big-budget superhero blockbusters, there’s been a bit of a reactionary trend, a wave of smaller “superhero, but…” movies. Most recently think Brightburn, with its “Superman, but evil” concept. We can throw Glass, Fast Color, and more into this category of films that take common superhero tropes and tics, look at them from a different perspective, and filter them through an indie lens, usually grounding them in more reality-based circumstances. 

'The Divine Fury' (2019) Movie Review

If you haven’t been waiting for a South Korean MMA exorcism movie, Kim Joo-hwan’s The Divine Fury is here to inform you that you need to get your priorities in order. It deftly blends horror and action and is sure to call to mind the likes of Blade at times, while grappling with weighty themes of loss, faith, loss of faith, and evil.

'Shadow' (2018) Movie Review

Zhang Yimou’s Shadow is a wash of grey; a veritable rainbow of ash and charcoal hues, occasionally punctuated by a splash of blood. This applies both to the visual aesthetic as well as the morality of the characters and narrative. At times, it watches like a black and white wuxia saga, Shakespearean in scope and scale. But while pretty and grand, and the idea of a historical epic from the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers sounds like a great concept, Shadow falls flat and cold.

'Master Z: Ip Man Legacy' (2018) Movie Review

This will surprise absolutely no one, but Yuen Woo-ping can stage the hell out of a fight. The guy is a legend for good reason. And he displays this particular skill front and center in his latest directorial effort Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, which features choreography on par with some of his best. Inventive and thrilling, it runs the gamut from incredibly technical martial arts skill to high-flying artistry that calls to mind his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Max Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Dave Bautista, and Tony Jaa in a movie directed by Yuen Woo-ping? If that doesn’t move you to watch Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, you probably don’t like action movies. And if that’s the case, why are you here? I kid, I kid. But in all seriousness, if this trailer is any indication, Master Z is going to be a barn burner. Check it out.

'Furie' (2019) Movie Review

Not that any of you reading this have such criminal inclinations, but maybe don’t abduct children. You shouldn’t do this for a variety of moral, ethical, and legal reasons, obviously. But beyond that, in a purely practical sense, movies have taught us that should you travel this path, one of the child’s parents will inevitably be some sort of secret badass who will rain down holy vengeance upon you and your associates from which you will not escape. Such is the case Vietnamese director Kiet Le-Van’s Furie.

Triple Threat is all of my favorite things wrapped up in one convenient package. Action, martial arts, gunplay. Oh, and it stars every cinematic badass currently working. The credits include Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, JeeJa Yanin, Michael Wong, Michael Bisping, and Celina Jade. I hope I didn’t forget anyone, but I may have, the list is long and distinguished. As you may imagine, I’m beyond excited for Triple Threat, and that anticipation just took another huge leap forward with the first trailer. Check it out after the jump.
