Finally, the King of K-pop G-Dragon (GD) is making his way to Hong Kong! The multitalented rapper, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, and global fashion icon announced in March 2025 the Asia leg of his Übermensch solo world tour, just shortly after releasing his third studio album 'Übermensch' in February after 12 long years since his second studio album.  The K-pop star kicked off the tour on March 29 and 30 in South Korea at Goyang Stadium. He then continued the tour in May, hitting up locations such as Japan, the Philippines, Macau, Taiwan, and Indonesia, before rounding things off in Hong Kong. From Wong Kar-wai films to tourist landmarks, neon signs have always been an iconic heritage that’s symbolic of Hong Kong. Celebrate the artistic romanticism of this slowly disappearing art form at this special exhibition in PMQ. Named ‘Neon Heroes: Illuminated Dreams’, six interactive neon sculptures in the courtyard of this historic compound stand as a tribute to this glowing part of Hong Kong’s legacy. What makes this exhibition even more special is that it is a showcase of talents across three generations of local artists. Jerry Loo has collaborated with his grandfather Wong Kin-wah, who is one of Hong Kong’s most senior neon tube-bending craftsmen with over 66 years of experience under his belt. Together, they’ve reinterpreted our city’s beloved neon signs, blending traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary vision and aesthetic. Since he is a superhero enthusiast, Loo has used this as his inspiration for this series of vibrant sculptures, each influenced by a different superpower or superhero transformation. For example, there is The Luminous, a tribute to anime legends like Dragon Ball; The Dragon Within, a nod to the most ubiquitous Chinese mythological creature; and Superhero Landing, mimicking Superman’s classic fist-down pose, complete with dramatic cracks on the floor.  Apart from these contemporary pieces, there will also be a signature neon work from Master Wong on show, offering a look into the meticulous details that went into lighting up Hong Kong’s golden age. The exhibition concludes with the short animated film Neon Waltz by Loo himself, who used to create 2D animation before bringing his work into the tangible realm, tracing Master Wong’s journey to becoming a fully fledged neon lights master.  If you look fondly on the Hong Kong days of old, you’ll enjoy seeing how the neon art form is shifting from legacy to future at this exhibition. ‘Neon Heroes’ is available at the PMQ from June 29 to July 7. The 2025 World Airline Awards recently took place at the Paris Air Show, and Hong Kong’s air carriers have done us proud. Out of more than 325 global airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways has been ranked third in the world’s top airlines of 2025. This year, our city’s flag carrier has risen up the ranks from fifth spot in 2024 – and was also crowned first place for the World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment and the World’s Best Economy Class. Additionally, Cathay also won third place for the World’s Best Cabin Crew, the World’s Best Business Class, and the World’s Cleanest Airlines. Basically, we have an amazing economy class and entertainment for the everyman, as well as a top-notch business class, all tended by friendly and attentive crew members, within some of the world’s cleanest planes. Hong Kong Airlines ranks at number eight for the World’s Best Regional Airlines, while HK Express ranks at number three on the list of the World’s Most Improved Airlines. On the World’s Top 20 Airlines in 2025 list, Qatar Airways was crowned number one, followed by Singapore Airlines, a carrier which had previously won the top slot five times – these two airlines have been consistently jostling for number one and two on this list since 2017. Lee Kum Kee is getting a playful makeover by teaming up with Japanese toy giant Bandai to launch a miniature gashapon collection. Following a successful Japan-exclusive release, the collection introduces six iconic Hong Kong-style sauces as adorable capsule toy charms.  From June 22, 2025, Bandai's official GBO shops in Hong Kong and Macau, along with gashapon machines in major department stores and malls, will feature exclusive Lee Kum Kee sauce-themed gashapon machines. Priced at $30 per capsule, each toy is a mini-replica of Lee Kum Kee's most beloved Hong Kong sauces: oyster sauce in 'glass' bottle and squeeze bottle, steamed fish soy sauce, spicy shrimp chilli oil, char siu sauce, and XO sauce. The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) has already been in Hong Kong for three years, and to celebrate its anniversary, the museum is launching The Palace Academy Summer Art-venture Series. This includes learning and engagement programmes, summer workshops, discounts on memberships, family package prices, and more. At the heart of these celebrations is a series of engaging, creative activities designed for young people and families. The ‘Storytelling through Patterns’ masterclass explores how patterns found in artefacts and architecture can be presented in dynamic narratives to bridge heritage and modernity – so if you enjoyed HKPM’s ‘The Ways in Patterns’ exhibition, this will be right up your alley. This masterclass, held on July 22, will recruit 50 young creatives aged between 14 to 18, and selected students will receive a one-year HKPM Friends - Youth membership. Of the various land crossings between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, arguably the most worn and underrated is the Huanggang port. But this checkpoint is due to get a new facelift, with Shenzhen authorities confirming that the project is expected to reach completion within this year. The Huanggang port is the first and only 24-hour passenger checkpoint between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and has been in the process of reconstruction since 2019. This is the first time that we’ve had official confirmation about the new port’s anticipated timeline. Over the years, travellers have veered towards the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau checkpoints since they’re more straightforward and linked directly to the MTR. In contrast, Huanggang has always been a little more annoying to navigate, as one would need to go through immigration board a bus, alight after a short ride to go through another immigration checkpoint, before finding and getting back on the same bus. The upside is that it is open around the clock, and since it runs on coach services, travellers will always be able to get a seat. Thankfully, the upcoming remodel is also bringing new checkpoint arrangements. Travellers will only need to go through one round of inspection and customs clearance, replacing the original system which required two checks in both the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese sides. This “co-location arrangement” means that the clearance process can be dialled down from approximately 30 minutes to a mere five minutes. Without the need for two separate spaces, the redesigned Huanggang port will also be dramatically reduced in size, and the land that will be freed up has been bookmarked for a “collaborative innovation zone” for developing an “international talent community”, with 180,000 sq m of living spaces with healthcare and education facilities. And if you’ve never been a fan of the coaches? The new Huanggang port will be connected to Hong Kong’s Northern Link spur line that connects the East Rail and Tuen Ma lines, as well as Shenzhen’s Metro Line 7. Hong Kong's dining scene is losing two waterfront gems as Hue Dining, a modern Australian restaurant, and Ink Cafe, an al fresco cafe and bar, prepare to close their doors at the end of June. Run by Wolly Pig HK, these spots are well-loved for their casual bites, welcoming vibe, and killer harbour views. But it's not all sad news, as they're going out with a bang. To thank their loyal guests, Hue Dining is offering a 20 percent discount on their three-course lunch and dinner menus from June 23 to 26, as well as a farewell brunch on June 28 and 29. Those who dine on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday will also get a free welcome cocktail or mocktail with their dinner. As for Ink Cafe, they're throwing a renovation party on June 30 with happy hour prices starting at $80 for tap beers, gin and tonics, and cocktails. Bar snacks will also start from $80, so it's the perfect chance to raise a glass before Ink Cafe takes a quick break to reopen with a fresh look in July. According to the QS World University Rankings 2026 report, published by higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds on June 19, Hong Kong now boasts five universities ranking among the top 100 universities in the world, including the highest-ranked educational institution on the 2026 list located within East Asia. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has moved up six spots since last year’s list to now claim the title of the 11th best university in the world. QS’ data shows that HKU’s academic reputation scored 99.3, while the employment outcomes of their alumni scored 99.8. This stellar ranking on the global chart means HKU has beat out various other universities that are also known for their academic excellence, such as Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (ranked at number 12), Peking University (ranked at number 14), the University of Pennsylvania (ranked at number 15), Tsinghua University (ranked at number 17), Yale (ranked at number 21), and Princeton (ranked at number 25). The only Asian university ranking higher than HKU is the National University of Singapore, which came in the list at number eight. But Hong Kong’s other tertiary institutions also made commendable rankings, with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) climbing up four spots from last year to now sit at number 32, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) rising three spots to reach rank 44. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University rose three spots from last year to just sit under the top 50 ranking at number 54, and the City University of Hong Kong at 63. Among the full list that considers 1,500 global universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has once again retained its top ranking for the 14th consecutive year, while Imperial College London has also retained their second place from the 2025 rankings. Calling all foodies: Two of our city’s best restaurants have been named in the annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list! This year’s rankings were announced during a live awards ceremony held in Turin, Italy on June 19, featuring restaurants from 22 countries across five continents, with 10 new dining venues debuting on the list.  Photograph: Courtesy Wing This year, two Hong Kong fine-dining stalwarts made the prestigious list, both placing higher than their 2024 rankings. Following its entry as number 24 on the 2024 list, modern Cantonese restaurant Wing landed at number 11 this year and took home the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality award. As for The Chairman, one of our city’s top refined Cantonese dining venues, the restaurant climbed up seven spots and is now ranked at number 19. Going by the World’s 50 Best list, Hong Kong has Asia’s third-best restaurant, only outranked by Bangkok’s Gaggan at number 6 and Tokyo’s Sézanne at number 7.  Looking at entries from the rest of the world, Maido in Peru jumped four places from 2024’s rankings and clinched the top spot on the list, followed by Asador Etxebarri from Spain’s Atxondo region at number two and Quintonil from Mexico City at number three.  Photograph: Courtesy The Chairman This year’s special mentions include Bangkok’s chef Pichaya ‘Pam’ Soontornyanakij taking home the Best Female Chef award and her restaurant, Potong, being recognised with the Highest New Entry award; London-based Ikoyi securing the Highest Climber award after moving up 27 spots from the 2024 list; Albert Adrià from Barcelona’s Enigma presented with the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice award; as well as chef-restauranteur Massimo Bottura and partner Lara Gilmore being jointly awarded with the Woodford Reserve Icon Award. Do you remember an exhibition last summer that displayed miniature scenes of the Central and Western districts in Pacific Place? In case you missed it, the Joyful Miniature Association (JMA) is back once again, this time with more incredibly detailed dioramas of life in Hong Kong, including seven brand-new miniatures that have never been seen before. The 24 art pieces will highlight some of Hong Kong’s famous landmarks, cultural customs, and unique lifestyles. Peek into painstaking recreations of Sunday dim sum at Maxim’s Palace in City Hall, chaotic nighttime revelry along Lan Kwai Fong, the customs of worship and pin wheel buying at Man Mo Temple and Wong Tai Sin Temple, a moving model of the fifth generation of the Peak Tram funicular railway, views of Victoria Harbour complete with boats sailing and fireworks, and more.  Photograph: Courtesy Joyful Miniature Association The new miniatures at this show include the Kai Tak Sports Park, the legendary old Kowloon Walled City, night scenes of Temple Street, horse racing, aquatic animals on sale at one of the many shops along Goldfish Street, the cable car at Ngong Ping 360, and Hong Kong’s transhipment history at the Insta-famous Western District Pier. The JMA brings together over 100 Hong Kong artists who collectively integrate the traditionally European craft of miniatures with our distinctly local culture using cutting-edge technology.
